Advice:
my sons imagination

My 7 yr old has always had a very active imagination. He tells very vivid stories that just can't be true. He talks about having to work at night. He says he is a vampire and he talks about bats biting. He also says he is Hulk. The big problem comes when he's with other children and he tells them these things. They, of course, don't beleive him and they tell him that. He then gets angry and retaliates. The other day at school he was telling another child about being a vampire. The other child didn't beleive him so my son bit him. I don't want children to make fun of him. I don't want to take away his imagination. I need advice on what to do.
I have talked to his doctor and his counselor about this, but they just say we should monitor it.

" I know a lot, if not most, ADHD kids, are very creative, and can have over-active imaginations. But that isn't always a bad thing.. in fact, I see it as a very good trait! (as long as they're not harming themselves or others, of course, and I do agree with monitoring it.)

When my son was 5, he also thought he was the Hulk. I mean, he REALLY thought he was the Hulk! And unfortunately, one day while I turned my back for a split second, he tried to pick up the TV, which, of course, he didn't succeed with, and it only resulted in a trip to the emergency room with a split-open head. :(

My tale does have a happy ending though.. he is now 10 years old, and he's realized now the difference between reality and fantasy, and equally as wonderful, he has become an extremely talented story-teller and artist, and receives top marks in his class for his imaginative and creative talents! :)

So, I would just monitor it. I think when they mature enough to really realize the difference between reality and fantasy, it can and will become a wonderful quality that he can share and take pride in. :) "

" Thank you both for your replies.. I do monitor the shows he watches and have no problem taking the tv away completely for a few days (when needed). I have also put blocks on the tv so he can't watch it at night and he can't watch certain rated shows.
I also see the positive in his imagination and I did sit down with him lastnight to talk about it. We made a journal for him to draw pictures in that we can write about together.
I really just hate the fact that other kids are going to make fun of him and that he reacts badly.. but it is something we will continue to work on. "

" hi toress i have been in exactly the same situation as you with your childs imagination, my son is 8 years old almost 9 yhowever upto around about a year ago he had invisible friends, we had mertyl turtle who wasnt actually a turtle but an elderly lady ghostwith long black hair, and we had the ants who were very very naughty, my son used to say that the ants controlled his head and they told him what to do and they crawled into his ears and made his brain bad if he didnt listen, i was also just told to monitor it, and of course when he would be in school and get into trouble this would lead to him blaming the ants and then getting picked on by all the other children this was really upsetting however over the past 12 months he seems to of grown out of this, he still mentions them occasionly but not that often at all, i cant really offer any advice however i hope i have made you feel a bit more posotive about the whole thing "
