I was wondering if there are other parents who may be dealing with issues concerning Vyvanse. My youngest son is on this medication. We have notice that he is losing weight. The medicine is killing his appetite. We have talked to the doctor about this issue and he said that is common with any of these medications. We are working on tring to get his weight up, but are wondering if make he is suffering from something else. He is liking to much for my taste how skinny he is. He like that his ribs show ect. But when is misses a dose he eats us at of house and home. Another thing we are concerned about is his drive. He does not want to do anything any more. He ahs become "lazy" so to speake. This medication is NOT making he like a zombie but his drive is gone. Is anyone experienceing this issues or are we making more out than it is? Any help or advise, we welcome. Concerned and Confused!!!

We had those issues with Adderall and switched to Vyvanse and they ended. He is pretty skinny and likes the way it looks to my dismay, but he hasn't actually lost weight...he got taller so lost his little belly.
My suggesstion is to talk to your doctor about trying something else. Meds work better or worse depending on their individual body chemistries.

My son is currently on Vyvance.Because is a low stimulant it effects his appetite. He has been on 40mg for the last 2 months. I have to remind him to eat constintally. I'll make sure I have his favorite snacks at home. I let him have one snack of his choice after he attempts to make a "happy plate" We sure do love those "happy plates" lol Sometimes I'll even let him eat a poptart a night if hes hungary again. Believe it or not, snacks arent always good enough so I'll allow him 15min extra of game time on his playstation

Hi there
My son is not on this medication, but when we learnt of the side affects all these ADHD medicines can have knowing my son is slim already, losing weight was a huge concern he would wither away if he lost weight, luckily he isn't having this side affect yet sometimes has lack of appeitite, what we have done is for this is bought 'milkshake drinks' like Up and Go the breakfast ones you can buy in the supermarket for those on the run people, they are fulling and at least you know it's a food subsitute and can help in filling them up and not lose weight as quickily as they might. Just an idea

My 5 year old is on Vyvance and He seems to eat all the time. He doesn't eat extra at mealtime but he makes sure he gets his snacks during the day and I have had to start giving him a bedtime snack, then he usually wakes up hungry in the middle of the night between 2-3 am. He gets up goes potty and then he's in my face whispering "Mommy...mommy...I'm hungry can I have a snack?" The main things we noticed with this med is at first his speech cleared up and he talked non-stop, and he was behave alot better( I mean ALOT better). But now his speech is back to not being as clear, and now he stutters, and he is back to loosing his temper to where he has to be restrained. So no we don't have to worry about the weight loss with this one.

My son was on vyvanse for 2 months. He dropped 12 lbs in 2 weeks. I was a little concerned about it but what really got my attention is that he has developed severs tics, so I am currently weening him off of it and am not sure if I am going to try putting him another medication. I am hoping the tics will go away soon he has problems with balance and has facial tics as well. Plus his temper got really bad and would cry for very small things.

Those are some pretty severe reactions, Irish. There could be some sort of allergic reaction going on there. Have you talked to his doc about his side effects?

My son took Vyvanse during the 08-09 school year~ At first I loved the medication...he only had to take one dose per day compared to two maximum doses of other ADHD meds, which was great because I was concerned about his weight and growth. My son is "constitutionally delayed," which is another way of saying he isn't growing like the average child. He's a fifth grader now but looks like a second grader. After a few months on Vyvanse, however, I noticed he was much grumpier, sometimes very angry when he was "coming down" from his meds in the evening. I didn't like that but thought I could deal with it. The medicine was still helping interpersonal relationships, though it didn't do much for getting homework finished. Then, in April, my son started pulling his hair out. I knew he was under stress (his "favorite school ever" was being closed to save the school district money), but the development was still very disturbing. His bald spot started out the size of a quarter, but quickly developed into a patch that covered the entire right, front quarter of his head. I took him to the doctor and the doctor informed me that hair pulling is a "tic;" a condition worsened by his medication. I decided to take my son off the medication after school ended for the summer, and the hair pulling stopped immediately after the drugs exited his system. Now it's August, and the hair is growing in but it's much thinner and still pretty obvious. I gave him a buzz-cut and lightened his hair using "Sun-In" but there's only so much that can be done. After I took him off Vyvanse, I also noticed a huge change in his moods...he's driving ME insane but HE'S a happier person. I put him back on Ritalin ER for the 09-10 school year, but I'm back in the position where he needs two doses per day. I'm not happy about it, but the side-effects are much easier to accept. That, and he's down-graded his "hair pulling tic" to just constant tongue clucking. Much more socially acceptable!

I am making an appt for him granny. We are new to this area so I am researching drs first. Don't want to pick one out of the phone book. It could have been allergic reaction but I have stopped giving it to him. I have found also that it is worse when he is tired too. But he still has balance issues and uncontrollable movements. He just started school yesterday, I am hoping that the playing at recess and being active will burn some energy and calm him down a bit. We are going to have him tested also, because several of his drs. said that some "tics" can be small seizures. Not all the time, but it is a possibility
