My friend Dan lives in Iowa and is paralyzed from the chest down. He only recieves SSI monthly to live on. He has told me that he cannot recieve any other income because he was 17 when he had his accident and had not quartly income at the time, whatever that actually means. I find this very hard to believe and sounds absolutely absurd seeing now that he's an adult. He is living on less then what I make bi-weekly! Any suggestions or anyone know anything that can be done about this?? I'd appreciate it!

Personally I don't have any experience with any of that. I am on disability retirement from my job since 2001. This is a group of quads, sometimes smart-alec, always knowledgeable. He may want to join the group to see what they can do to help him.

He is correct. He is qualified for SSI because his parents paid social security. There is really no other income to add, but he should receive food stamps and HUD. Also, many places have energy assistance programs. In Arkansas we have Arkansas Rehabilitation Services and his state will have state services, but the name might be different other than just changing the state. There a pretty recent changes in Social Security that apply to working with a disability. The problem is because he is on SSI and not SSDI--did not work himself--that he will lose income if he gets a job. However, the work incentives since 2004 are better--like he can keep medical benefits for 9 years after getting a job. I would totally suggest that he get a college degree and/or graduate degree. State rehab services will help him with that. Pay for books and some other expenses. That way when he does go to work it is likely that the salary would definitely make up for his SSI loses. Also, state rehab services should help with independent living issues. Hope all of that helped.

I am a Victims Advocate and am working right now with a young friend of mine who is 21 and was invovled in a horrbile car wreck 10-12-11. If his accident was due to Drugs or Alchol, MADD in his state will help. He needs to contact his local Victims Advocate, call the police in his area or Prosecutor, Advocates work for them. It is sad that fully functioning people are stuck on such meger incomes as SSI and such and forced into a life of "living off the system" Try these steps I am here if you need more info. Meechelle

Sadly, all I think he can receive is SSI. Do you know exactly what level of paralysis he is? If it is low enough where he can move his arms and hands, he may be able to get a job. I do think he is able to receive food stamps. And yes, I did research.

You might also want to google a website called CareCure. It is a wealth of info on SCI.
