Hyperthyroidism?

So I finally got out of my house and went to my doctor a couple days ago, and he ordered a blood test to check for hyperthyroidism.
The problem with this is that I am absolutely TERRIFIED of blood and needles, and adding to that the fact that my panic attacks are really acting up, so much that I had to go on homebound so that I wouldn't miss any more school and I'm afraid to leave my house, that I don't know if I can go get the blood test done. ;_; I had a very negative experience with a blood test a few years ago, where I was having panic trouble, went to the doctor (in a different clinic from where I go now) and had a horrible panic attack. When she said she needed a blood test to check my thyroid, it became even worse, to the point where she said she would call the local mental institution to strap me down. I was repeating over and over to my mom, "Please, no blood test, no, no, no," like a mantra. Finally about a half-hour later I calmed down enough to have the blood test, and I got through it by listening to music and keeping my eyes shut tight. When my mom and I went back to get the results, however, we found that she had not tested my thyroid at all; rather she screened me for drugs (clean, of course) and checked to see if I was anorexic (I'm naturally really skinny, not anorexic). The tests were both negative, I was completely pissed that I went through that blood test for nothing, and I never went back to that clinic. So not only am I afraid of having blood drawn, I'm also afraid that my doctor is going to lie to me. Is there any way to diagnose hyperthyroidism without having a blood test, or to tell if it's hyperthyroidism and not panic disorder just through physical symptoms? If not, I would really like some advice on getting through the blood test without freaking out; I have some Xanax that I could take if worse comes to worse. Help? Posted on 11/01/09, 08:11 am |

I would be pissed off,too.the WORSE thing the nurse did is to threaten to strap you down.If you are having a panic attack that had to make it MUCH worse.Sometimes I wander about theese so called professionals.Plus they sometimes think if your youger or elderly they can treat you different.I am 45 and I know if It was me the way she handed your panic condition it would make me alot worse

The only way to check for hyperthyroidism is through a blood test. I too am deathly afraid of needles, but when I have to have a blood test, I do a lot of self-talk before I go. I tell myself that the medical profession is trying to help me and if I can just get through the needle stick, I'll be okay. When I was first diagnosed with panic disorder and put on medication, I also started therapy. I too was agoraphobic and afraid to be in public places. A month later I was to start college and asked my therapist how in the world was I going to do this! She told me to just put one foot in front of the other and do it! Lo and behold...the medication started working and I did what was suggested. Four years later I received my Bachelor's Degree with a GPA of 3.55! You too can become panic free! All it takes is baby steps and doing what the doctors and mental health people suggest.

It's odd ... I have absolutely no fear of needles or blood. Put me in a crowd and you'll see me shake like a leaf on a tree, but needles are not a bother at all.
Just reflecting on what gets us racing. Bondi -- best of luck. I hope it goes well!

I managed to get the blood test done, thanks partly to Xanax and partly to pure stubbornness, lol.
It turns out that I don't have hyperthyroidism, all my vitamin levels are fine, I'm healthy as a horse... aside from panic attacks. I suppose that having hyperthyroidism would have been the easy way out, so of course I wouldn't have it. It's always the hard way when it comes to panic, and I'm getting tired of it. Now I have to go make the rounds with shrinks, have them give me medicine and tell me to get over it, and have this the rest of my life. I'm pretty depressed right now, to be perfectly honest. I had hope that all of this could be fixed forever and now... I know that it never will be, that I'll be dealing with it for the next little piece of forever, and it's horrible to loose that hope that I was harboring. ;_;

Hey, I actually have the onset of hyperthyroidism and believe me, I still feel like I don't have a reason why I get panic attacks. I am not sure if that is the reason why or if it is just the way that i think.. because I do not get panic attacks just out of the blue sitting at home. it is only when i am out of my comfort zone, so i think that sounds to me like it is more likely to be caused from the way we think??? beats me. I'm so over this.
