I use to be the type to hop in my truck and drive wherever i needed to go. I use to love to drive especially on the expressway pushing 80mph!!
But NOW arggg as of the last year or so. I get panic attacks driving on the damn expressway!!! I am fine on the scenic routes in the neighborhood. doing at least 45 maybe 50mph. Whats wrong with me?? why do I get panic driving on the expressway?!?!? Am I alone?? Talk to me folks! I haven't been down to see my parents unless my DH drives me...he's over it, and so am I. He doesn't understand why I can drive in the neighborhood but not on the expressway. Posted on 10/14/09, 10:10 am |

LOL, I was cracking up just reading that!! Only because I do the same thing! We have a road here, rt. 46, and there's a point where you can continue on 46 or merge onto rt 80 (the bastard highway), and I'm ALWAYS like "do I don't I ahhh!", then I stay on 46. The town I have to go to is only the next exit, and would take me about 5 minutes, but noooooo....these stupid panic attacks keep me on the opposite road for an extra 20 minutes! Isn't it crazy?
I have to drive 40 minutes to my mom's house later today and I'm freaking out about it. =(

Yeah well my hubby told me once to stop the car and let him drive and that he wanted to get to our house in the five minutes it took! He said "I'd like to get there like today"!

I miss my mom and dad. When I first moved where i live w/hubby. I was driving to my parents house almost every weekend. They live a good hour away. I haven't seen my parents in a good 2 months now! =( My little sister birthday is the 22nd. I usually make the cakes in the family. But i take it to them. My sister asked me if i was making her cake this year....I don't know what to do. Oh well Hubby is going to have to drive me down i guess. Sorry for babbling on...

Just wanted to chime in here and say you're not the only one! I too, was a driving maniac - i loved driving! and i loved especially road trips alone. my family lived 400 miles away and i actually preferred the drive alone, with no one tagging alone.
fast forward to the first time i had a panic attack out of the blue on the highway and it's put me in the same spot as you guys. I still drive, all over town, and on the highway, alone. and i drive the 400 miles to my family's house, but only if someone is with me. i haven't driven more than 20 miles alone in a couple years. you're not crazy! the important thing is that you HAVE to keep doing it and you can't let yourself be chickened out of driving on the highway. unfortunately the best way to really get over this is to face the fear. -Rebecca

Just know that no matter how you start feeling it's a product of your own mind and you WILL get over it. If you start panicking, so what? It's going to go away in 5 minutes. That's what i say to myself. Then i focus on something else - calling people helps A LOT. it totally takes my mind off it. Let us know how you do! :)
