For the last several weeks I wake up @ 3:30 from horrible panic attacks brought on by nightmares. I had really bad panic attacks 5 years ago, but since I have been able to keep my panic attacks under control. Until about a month ago when I had a dinner party at my house and I don't know if I had to much to drink and that set me off, or just the building of stress from a bad marriage, and other stresses that finally caused me to have a 5 hour panic attack. Now I am having these stupid nightmares and wake up freaking out. It annoys me wife. Luckily I have a neighbor who has panic attacks to and is so kind to offer me to come over anytime that I need some comfort during the storm.
Any suggestions? I am afraid of sleeping now. My wife likes to have a huge down comforter on our bed and I wake up so hot and sweaty. I am now on the couch with my Doberman and little dog to avoid waking my wife with my panic attacks. Posted on 10/04/09, 04:10 am |

Drinking can contribute to panic attacks and anxiety, specially when it is in excess. Thats hard to understand when alcohol is a depressant and usually relaxes folks. Your wife should understand your going through a hard time in your life and should support you anywhere and anytime. Whenever I panic and I need help my spouse it there 24/7 awake or asleep. Dont avoid waking your wife explain to her you need her as a support person to help you and that you going through panic attacks alone is a scary and lonesome feeling and just makes this worse. MY attacks also last for hours sometimes so your not alone. The stresses of your marriage just adds fuel to the fire. TALK ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS. Dont wait , dont let things linger between you and your wife, hit the ground running and put in some 1 on 1 time. Dont forget you got to take care of yourself also you deserve to life a happy life and one that is peaceful for the most part. Try and let the panic flow through you and dont fight it . The more you fight the worse it gets, believe me i have suffered for 10 years and im only 27. As for waking up sweating do what I do cut the ac down and tell you wife to deal with it and get under the covers lol . Also I run a bath before I go to bed so if I find myself waking up hot and in a panic I can just slide in a lukewarm bath and its like heaven. It really bring the panic to a stand still. Dont let things build up and dont drink in excess man. I hope this helped you and I hope you get to feeling better and take care of yourself . I see that you take xanax me to i take way less than what my doctors tell me to they want me to take .5mg twice daily but i take .25 once daily. I dont know your dosage but xanax is like a rollacoaster ride think about trying the xanax xr it keep you leveled out through the day unlike regular xanax acts quick and then leaves your body quick so you feel the up and down feeling. Best wishes man !! Fell free to hit me up for anything, anytime your not alone :)

I wake up in a panic attack quite frequently actually. I just don't remember if the panic attack is from any sort of dream. I just know that I wake up freaked out with a pounding, racing heart. The only way I deal with it is to allow myself to calm down and read a book for awhile.

Night panic attacks may require a change in your medication, or an additional dose before bed. You should talk to your doctor and see what they recommend. There is no reason to struggle about this, medications will probably work best, as it is very difficult to treat random night panic attacks with therapy alone.

the 5 hour panic attack could easily have been stopped with a large dose of valium type meds, thats what I did to stop my long panic attacks when all else failed, there is no need to endure these long panic attacks unless to proud or stubborn to take lots of valium, doesnt neighbour know this?
if you can find an antidepressant med that works for you to should stop all panic attacks, have you tried any otherwise panics while asleep are common, perhaps triggered by a dream, no one really knows, accept them, they are a problem but they wont hurt you

Thanks for all the good advice. I am not very keen on medication and have tried some of the antidepressant meds. Antidepressants made me a so washed out. I remember crying at dinner for no reason.
Harry3333: My neighbor is on Buspar, which I have at home to. But being the stubborn goat that I am, I could have just went to the medicine cabinet and ended the out of control terror. It feels good to have a support from people that know what it is like to have panic attacks. Is there a difference between panic attacks and anxiety attacks? I had a doc tell me that I suffer from PTSD and general anxiety disorder.

I have the same problem with taking medication I am afraid I will fight through them and still be awake. My boyfriend is not too supportive of my attacks either. He just doesn't realize all i need is some converstaion until I can fall asleep. Not mad though, i just wait it out...when daylight comes I usually fall asleep. Hang in there!!!

I think that Buspar is not the quick fix that Xanax or the Benzos, but
anything that is not habit forming sounds great to me. The efficacy of BuSpar has been demonstrated in controlled clinical trials of outpatients whose diagnosis roughly corresponds to Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Many of the patients enrolled in these studies also had coexisting depressive symptoms and BuSpar relieved anxiety in the presence of these coexisting depressive symptoms. The patients evaluated in these studies had experienced symptoms for periods of 1 month to over 1 year prior to the study, with an average symptom duration of 6 months. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (300.02) is described in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, III1 as follows: Generalized, persistent anxiety (of at least 1 month continual duration), manifested by symptoms from three of the four following categories: Motor tension: shakiness, jitteriness, jumpiness, trembling, tension, muscle aches, fatigability, inability to relax, eyelid twitch, furrowed brow, strained face, fidgeting, restlessness, easy startle. Autonomic hyperactivity: sweating, heart pounding or racing, cold, clammy hands, dry mouth, dizziness, lightheadedness, paresthesias (tingling in hands or feet), upset stomach, hot or cold spells, frequent urination, diarrhea, discomfort in the pit of the stomach, lump in the throat, flushing, pallor, high resting pulse and respiration rate. Apprehensive expectation: anxiety, worry, fear, rumination, and anticipation of misfortune to self or others. Vigilance and scanning: hyperattentiveness resulting in distractibility, difficulty in concentrating, insomnia, feeling “on edge,” irritability, impatience.

your list of symptoms match a chronic yeast infection, exactly, which could explain your panic attacks after drinking alcohol. I suffered from exactly all the things you describe in your reply but i refused to except that panic disorder is a disease or "disorder" in itself. i posit to the contrary that they are symptoms of an underlying cause. so i did months of research. finally found a questionnaire that fit my symptomatic profile more accurately: i have a severe candida overgrowth (yeast) due to lifelong repeated antibiotic use. i treat it now and so many of my symptoms have resolved. but it is a difficult infection to irradicate considering it has established root in my system for years and some of my symptoms get worse when i kill it off. its called die off (worsening of your symptoms before you get better). do you crave sugar, do you love bread, do have a sensitivity or crave alcohol? all of which are food for candida. so if you consume these it will feed it and then it will release copious amounts of toxins in your body that give you the symptoms you explained here. visit this website which has a detailed list of candida symptoms: www.candidafree.net. then if you match most of these symptoms google "candida questionnaire pdf" to download a survey that will score the severity of this infection. im not saying that you do have candida. im saying that it is a good start if you desire finding a cause to this monster! there are many other things that explain anxiety symptoms such as: heavy metals, environment toxicities/ sensitivities (ie food/ chemicals), hypoglycemia, hormonal imbalances, leaky gut syndrome, intestinal dysbiosis, all of which i have that are caused by a chronic candida infection. this thing is the most underdiagnosed disorder out there, but doctors do not endorse it even exists! my blood work at the doctors office was normal. but all theses things showed up on alternative testing when i sought a nutritionist. if you need some advice as to how to go about conquering candida (if its the case) then feel free to shoot me a message. Remember, it's not all in your head! good luck, and in good health,
L1

I think of a panic attack as an anxiety attack that jumps you from behind. You kinda know it's coming when all of a sudden, "WHAM!", it's like being startled up by a truck horn in your ear.
For myself, I had to drop the word "control" when it comes to anxiety. The more I try to control the fear, the more I feed it. I breath and engage in some mundane task -- like counting by 7's or reciting names on a sport's team roster or naming State capitals. It's very hard for the mind to be focused on two things at once, when I draw my focus away from the anxiety it always passes.
