There is hope & some questions on Xanax

Hi,

Not sure if you remember me. I have panic disorder and have been dealing with it for about 7 months now. At the beginning, they were out of control! I felt that my whole world was crashing down around me...and it was. Everyday I was frightened for the next day to come. I have been in therapy for 7 months, have been on prozac for 3-4 months and have been on xanax for 7 months. Everyday things are getting easier. Now there are days that I don't even think about panic disorder. And even when I feel weird...I am not frightened. My life has changed so much since 7 months ago...I broke up with my boyfriend of 8 years, moved and a new job. I have a whole new outlook on life. There is hope!! Believe me!! Not to say I don't have bad days...but they aren't as bad as they used to be.
Here's my question: I have been coming off of xanax for the last month...I have been on .5 and now this week am on .25. Of course, I am more stressed than usual, but I feel so tired, fatigued, at times I feel detached and my eye sight feels weird. Has anyone here experienced this coming off of xanax??

Thanks!!

" Is there a reason that you are coming off the Xanax? If everything was OK, you might want to stay on it a while longer till those "bad days" go away. There is no rush to get off the medication; many doctors would have you wait a year before SLOWLY weaning off. If you are weaning too fast, you WILL get some side effects--xanax is not an easy drug to get off of if you go too fast. Some people need that last .25 for months-- before they can get rid of it.

The best thing to do is go back up to .5 and see if you feel better. If you do, then stay there for a while before dropping down again. I hope you are reporting this to your doctor--they might want to adjust your medication or give you something else to help you get off the Xanax a little easier. "

" Thank you so much Shrinkingviolet for your advice. I am going to my shrink today for my regular session and will discuss my symptoms. It is concerning to me. Getting off the xanax is something I've been wanting to do for a while. Right now I feel I am emotionally better and of course applying for a new job that drug tests is also a huge reason. I just don't want things to get worse. Ahhh...the trials of having panic disorder. Xanax..such a miracle drug, however getting off of it...what a hell. Thanks again! "

" Drug tests should not be a problem for you as long as you are able to have your shrink document the medications you are on and you bring that document to the drug testing facility. There are plenty of people on medications that take drug tests every day--and fail the drug tests because they did not notify the testing facility of ALL the medications that they are on. As long as you are up front about the meds, there should be no problem--and it is always a good idea to follow-up after the testing with the employer to make certain you passed the test. "

" I was taking Xanax and prozac when I started my job. Just let the lab know you are prescribed them and your dosage. It will be ok then. "

" I am experiencing similar difficulties coming off of klonopin, but going from .5 to .25mg is a much larger drop than you may think. Try going down more slowly and split the pills into quarters. "

" Thanks to everyone for their comments. Its been difficult coming off of the xanax, but I am going to wait a little bit until I drop down to .125. Just can't wait to get off of it completely! Thanks again for all of your support!! "
