Advice:
Derealization?
Watch this
View More Posts Ignore
Recently I was told that some of the stuff that was happening to me was derealization, which is essentially a very strong panic attack. Basically what happens is my heart starts racing out of control, my breathing gets labored (hyperventalating and such), and my surroundings start to get shimmery and then blurry. If someone is around me and talking to me, usually I can still hear them but it is like they are really far away. I was wondering if anyone knows about and/or suffers from this. How do you bring yourself out of it? (or just panic attacks in general?) I've tried breathing exercises, but usually when I have one I'm too worked up to do them (unless someones beside me saying "breathe"). What can I do when I'm by myself?

" I go through derealizaton too. I feel like I'm in a dream. Nothing nor no one seems real. It's a very intense feeling of fear. I can still see and hear my surroundings but I feel like I'm not there. I do deep breathing, a lot of praying (I believe in the power of prayer!), I scan my body for muscle tension, etc.. I feel like I'll go crazy but I try to think positive and say I'm ok. "This will go away." It's a very difficult thing to get through. I'm on several meds. The latest med is Emsam. It's a patch I wear on my body. It's used for depression and parkinsons disease. The doctors are finding that Emasam works for panic attacks. I feel I've found some relief. It's a struggle for me everyday. I've had derealization since I was a small child. I have my family for support and understanding. "

" i go through the same thing...most of the time i can't get out of it. but sometimes if it isn't to bad i can just tell myself to calm down...i have to sit down and actually talk to myself and breath slowly...but ya it is very hard when you are panicking. try going to a doctor and see if they can prescribe you something that will prolly work the best. " I think with PA we all have had this happen, i know most of the time, for me THAT IS THE WORST PART. Its like your about to '' freak out'' i know its rough but like most on here i would suggest trying to get a low dose of something from your doctor. I have a bottle of LORAZAPAM i carry at all times.I only take them once or twice a week due to the addiction factor, but they work well and very fast for me. I am on a small half a milligram dose. Try them they may help you as they do for me, but we are all different. I wish you well and hope like hell you can break the cycle your under with these darn things. "

" I have gerd and it usually happens after I eat (Only recently) And I know it's from Anxiety. I feel cut off from everything around me and it only gets worse when I start worrying about it, and when I start trying to guess what is wrong with me seeing as how I don't have insurance for a doctor, what else can I do? I make it so everything is uncertain. I do this to myself. Anyway, if I close my eyes, that's when it is the worst. I feel like I'm dreaming more when I close my eyes. I don't take medicine for it, can't take it or I get sick.

I have to dissect my symptoms and pin point exactly what is wrong with me, otherwise I panic and want to hide from everyone. "

" Oh yeah, it sucks! I have it too sometimes. I have learned to not be so afraid of this feeling though. I used to get it so much! I noticed that the less I'm afraid of it, the less I have it. Its nothing to be afraid of and it always ends. Keep that in mind. Its NOT the precurse of mental illness! Its completely harmless. Just feels like your loosing your mind. I assure you your not though. "

" Yes, I still get this from time to time. It can be very frightening. I usually try to just divert myself, get up, drink cold water, etc to see if I can get over it but when it is real bad the only thing that works is to take my benzodiazapine (I have Klonopin). Klonopin doesn't work as fast as Xanax but I put it under my tongue and it gets into my bloodstream faster. "

" I also get this, it happend to me Yesterday while i was on my way to church, its like you can almost feel it coming on, and when you get it it feels like you are about to loose your mind, its really scary but my problem after I have it i think about it constantly because its so scary, im not on any medication but i do pray alot and know that its God that gets me through it every time. I dont go blurry but i feel like im in a complete dream like world and nothing is real, my Husband doesnt understand so it makes it more difficult. Good luck and God bless. "
