Out of hospital from acute attack

Well, my youngest son was getting married and I prayed and prayed I would get through it without an attack. I got sick and was in bed on Wed and Thurs of the week of the wedding. But I made myself get up and got through the Rehearsal Dinner on Friday, then the wedding on Saturday. After the reception, I came home and crashed. I stayed in bed all weekend and ended up in the hospital the following Tuesday with dehydration and pancreatitis flareup. I got out of the hsopital on Friday, but I just haven't bounced back like I normally do.
I've been mostly in bed since I got home and I've had a lot of pain still and some vomiting and a lot of lower back pain. Then I started having spasms when I urinated. I just got back from the doctor and now it looks like i may have a kidney stone. So I go tomorrow for tests for that. What a bummer! Once I do get better, I will be going back to my specialist and see about what we need to do from here. probably another stent placement since i've been sick a lot in the last 3 months. But I have to get well before I go see him since an ERCP could start another pancreatic attack. So i ask for your prayers. I've been a bit depressed over this and I'm just ready to feel better. I hope the kidney stone (if that's what it is) doesn't treat me too bad and I hope I can start feeling better so I can get back to my specialist and see where we go next. I ask for your support and prayers. I'm tired of being tired! Posted on 10/27/09, 06:10 pm |

If it does turn out to be kidney stones, I can offer some advice. I had kidney stones AND gallbladder stones at the same time. I had 2 kidney stone attacks before I was able to "catch" the stone. The stone was analyzed and it was determined that it was a calcium oxalate stone. For me, my "cure" consisted of reducing the amount of calcium in my diet. I cut back on cheese & milk and never had another attack. This all happened over 20 years ago. I know that many great advances have taken place. Be sure you take advantage of them all.
I’m glad you got to enjoy your son’s wedding; I’ve been told that it’s very important to try to live your life day-to-day. You should be proud that you endured the pain but were still able to be there… and I’m sure your son was proud of you as well. Hang in there! P.S. I never knew that an ERCP can cause a Pancreatic attach. I’m due for a replacement stent later this year. I’ll be sure to ask the doctor.

Yes, be sure to talk to your doctor about the stent replacement and pancreatic attacks. My doctor told me that's why he wants me as well as possible before he does one so we can be as sure as possible that it doesn't cause an acute attack.
Thank you for the info about the kidney stones. I've never had this before so I'll be sure and ask all I can about it. I drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of cheese. I would hate to think I'd have to give it up but if that's the cause, I definitely will! Thank you.

I'm sorry you've been in the hospital. I've noticed that my pancreatic flares are very closely related to stress. Have you had your catecholamines tested? If you have high norepinephrine levels, then clonidine may help you. It also lowers the pancreatic secretions. It's helped keep me out of the hospital.
Topping off my treatment, I also started amantadine, an anti-viral. I've had no pancreatic episodes since starting it. Hope you feel better soon!

Just wanted to add that stent placement did not help me at all. I have had 12 ercp's, five stents, and a sphincterotomy. I have even developed pancreatitis with a stent in place. All the procedures further damage the pancreas and place us at increased risk for pancreatic cancer.
The alternative pharmacologic therapy is much cheaper, non invasive, and definitely worth a try. Doctors just don't make much money from it like they do with the procedures and surgery. Sad but true!

Hi vturley,
I am sorry to hear that you have been having so much pain and sickness. I am really glad you got to be there for the wedding though. I have been doing so well for about over a month now, but now it seems I am starting to have alot of nausea, indigestion and pain in my back. I hope I am not flaring up for another attack or my duct has not become blocked again. I pray that, if you have stones, that can be taken care of easily and that you do not have another attack. Please keep up your spirits. I know it is hard not to become depressed, but you have always been such an encourager and a blessing to all of us on the site. Stay strong!

Thank you all for your kind words and support.
It turned out I did not have kidney stones. They decided I had an inflammation of my kidneys. This is the first time I've ever had anything like this. I am now feeling much better. My strength is coming back which is good. But honestly, I am in pain all the time. I'm eating, but it doesn't feel good. I wake up in pain, I go to bed in pain. I called my doctor today to find out where we stand on getting my appointment with my specialist. They told me they faxed all my records to them last Tuesday and they told them they would call me directly to set an appointment. So I called the specialists' office to see what the hold up was. They said they didn't have the paperwork. When I told them it was faxed last week, they said they would look and see if they could find it and would call me back. Arghhh, how frustrating! So now I'm waiting to hear back from them. I really hope they call tomorrow and tell me my appointment is soon. I'm tired of being this way. I haven't worked in about a month! I just don't feel like it. I don't have the energy and I'm afraid to start a project for a client, then get sick again or have a procedure and end up down for another week. I just feel I'm in limbo right now. Thank you all for being there for me. I appreciate you all!
