I'm new to this group and I joined because two weeks ago my aunt to whom I'm very close was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She and my mom (sisters) went to see the oncologist today and because of the extensive health problems my aunt has there is nothing that can be done, no chemo, no radiation, no meds, no surgery - nothing.
Today my aunt was given 3-6 months to live. Posted on 11/03/09, 08:11 pm |

I'm so sorry for this. This disease is brutal and can tear families apart like a freight train barrelling right on through. All the best to your entire family. I hope you can spend a lot of quality time with your aunt now, remembering all the fun times that you shared together.

You and your Aunt are in my prayers. I guess the cancer is too severe to give a round of chemo? Sometimes Gemzar can prolong the life and it does not have too severe side effects. Enjoy all the time that you can. It sounds like you have a good support system for your Aunt. I hope you have great Hospice nurses in your area. I so hate this disease. I hope you can find some comfort at this website.
Bless you, Pat

Thank you for you comments, thoughts, good wishes and prayers. I'm wondering when the "stunned" feeling will go away, I'm two days into knowing what will happen and I still feel like I've been hit by a truck. I can't talk about it al all without crying.
What do I do now? Should I document our time together through photos? Give her space to deal with this? How do I support my mom? (my aunt's sister)

I am so sorry for your family. My husband went home to be with the Lord in July 2008.
He had pancreatic cancer and lived 14 weeks. How old is your Aunt? If you need to talk I am here. Phil 4:13 Christine

I feel your pain my Mom was diagnosed May 6'th 2009 and died 13 days later on May 19'th 2009 she was only 56.I have never seen such a horrible and cruel disease. My Mom was my best friend and I miss her so much!!But this monster disease caused her to have a massive stroke. After that Mom knew it wouldn't be long. She was ready she was still able to talk for a little while after the stroke and she told people "I can't walk why would I want to live"?She told me one day "Jennifer I'm ready to meet my maker".Which to me was amazing.I also lost my oldest brother in 1997 to a car accident so I know that they're together again too.I agree with you it takes a lot of time for the news to sink in.I'll still wake up sometimes and say oh my god Mom had cancer and she died is this real!?!?I feel time helps a lot and this is brand new for you give yourself time.My thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole family~

You asked what you should do with the time you have. I think making a scrapbook of warm family memories and then sharing it with her (and reminiscing over it all together) would be a great thing. If your mother is so inclined, she could participate in making this.
It seems to matter to be sharing and reliving all the various experiences you've had over a lifetime together. Keeping her company, running errands, etc could all make a difference. So sorry. I hate this disease.

I have prayed to St. Peregrine. My wife prayed at my bedside and we prayed together. I pray for your aunt and your family. I hope that you can find moments of peace during this troubled time.

Thank you all for your well wishes, good thoughts and prayers. I was with my aunt today, we spent a couple hours together, laughing going through some of her jewelry and crying too. It hurts so much to see her in so much pain. I can be in the "here and now" for and with my aunt, but when she passes, I don't know if there will be any way to comfort or console my mother. I'm going to start taking pictures to make a scrapbook and hopefully going through it with my family after my aunt dies will console some and hopefully it will make us smile thinking about what a wonderful, giving, loving caring soul my aunt is.
