Rough Treatment

Hi Ladies, My treatment on Wednesday was very rough and I am still pretty shaken up from it. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this… After my pre-med was done and they hung my first chemo bag, the Taxol. I was settling in to fall asleep, that Benadryl stuff does wonders! Well as I laid down, my chest started to hurt, it burned something felt very wrong. I sat up and my chemo nurse noticed and asked if I was ok, so as I started to explain I couldn’t breathe. My chest hurt immensely, my head was spinning I couldn’t sit up I felt like I was going to throw up, I couldn’t get any air in at all. My nurse called for help and they immediately stopped the chemo and started injecting steroids and Benadryl and something else right into me. I felt past ddrunk, and it took awhile but my breathing and heart got back to normal, once I was normalized they started me back on the chemo. I didn’t have another episode and the nurses assured me it wouldn’t happen again. But I am scared. That was such a very scary moment, and I want to believe it won’t… but I am not sure. Has anyone gone through this?
Thank you
~Renee

" I had three moderate allergic reactions to Carboplatin last year though this doesn't sound exactly like what you went through.. The first feeling was my mind began to get fuzzy and I felt feint, then heat in my hands and feel followed by projectile vomiting.. The chemo was stopped.. I was given antihistamine and the chemo was resumed, more slowly.. After three incidents they stopped the carboplatin as a full on reaction can become life threatening. I think you need to ask your doctor exactly what this incident was. I was also having Taxol at the time, but tolerated this well, though it is more likely to react to taxol than the carbo.. The allergic response typically comes on within two or three minutes after the drug infusion begins.

We don't get benadryl nor anything else to calm us down or cause us to want to sleep in the UK and I can't help wondering why you find this necessary in the US.. surely the less drugs we have the better...

Hope this doesn't happen again and that the chemo brings great results.. xxx "

" I, too, would ask the doctor. I would ask how they are sure that it won't happen again. It is encouraging that you were able to complete your treatment.

The benadryl is supposed to help with allergic reactions. It would be interesting to know how many reactions the USA has versus UK. "

" Hi Renee
I also had an allergic reaction to the Taxol the first time I had it. The reaction started after the nurse increased the rate of the drug though the I.V. I turned beat red, I felt like my chest was going to explode. My heart was pounding and my chest was tight. The nurse stopped the drug right away and after a few minutes my pulse was back to normal and my chest wasn't tight anymore. The nurse started the drug again and this time after she increased it I was fine. I never did have a reaction to it again, and I have completed all 6 treatments. The nurse told me the same thing, that it wouldn't happen again, and she was right. I hope this makes you feel a little bit better about going in for your next treatment.
All the best
Randa "

" Thank you all so much for your input. I am going to ask Dr. Rose more about this. Luckly he makes it a point to schedule a small check in with him before chemo treatment, so I will have my chance before hand. I know the benadryl is for allergic reactions, and they did warn me that I could have one. I am not sure if that is what that was or not. I just know I don't want it to happen again. The funny thing is through all of this... I think that was one of the scariest moments for me.. and I don't want a repeat. I think it's because it came with no warning at all.
Again thank you. I'm hoping your all right and it was just a allergic reaction.

" I had my first cehmo treatment on Oct 8th.The nurse explained what some of the side effects would be and within the first en minutes it happend..all the ones you mentioned but adding a might lower back pain. The nurse was calm explained what she was doing...stopped the treatment, gave my benadyl and restarted the chemo. I had my second treatment yesterday, and the nurses and dr was right...I didn't have the same reaction...went very smoothly. Although the pain that comes after...wow! Did you have much pain for a few days? "
