Hello. I just found out that I have a 8 cm cyst on my right ovary. My CA125 was in the normal range. I had an ultasound done at the office which showed growth of the cyst since my last ultrasoudn 6weeks prior. My doctor says he doesn't think it's cancer but yet he is going to perform a pelviscopy to remove my right ovary, tubes, and of course the cyst. I of course have been reading on the internet and most websites say the only reason the doctor removes the ovary is if they suspect cancer. I'm really worried and can't get any emotional/mental relief. My surgery isn't until a week from today. My mother died of cancer last year but by the time they discovered it, it was everywhere so they really aren't sure of where it originated. I'm 42 years old with two kids. They're teenagers but I can't get out of my mind dying and leaving them. Any words of wisdom?

There are many women here who can give you more information than I can as I am fairly new to ovarian ca. I would ask your doctor why he is taking the tube, etc. I doubt that he would tell you that he doesn't think that it is cancer if he thought it was. Good luck! Margy

Plenty of words of wisdom here. The thoughts and feelings you are having are a natural reaction to the situation you find yourself in. Ovarian cancer is extremely rare and the huge majority of women with your condition have a benign condition that is easily treated. Your normal CA125 should further reassure you.
However, your doctor is totally right to be cautious, because a diagnosis of cancer can not be ruled out without a biopsy of the growth.. He is also correct to be removing the ovary and tubes as conservative surgery, where just the cyst is removed, could release malignant cells into the abdomen, if, this does turnout to be cancer. All growths involving the ovaries should be treated in this way, as it is vital that ovarian cancer is investigated, however unlikely it might be and for this to be done as early as possible. Ovarian cancer confined to one ovary is a curable condition. I hope this reassures you, as really there is nothing to be done until you get this surgery over with and an definitive diagnosis. You are bound to be worried, but the best you can do is to distract yourself all that you can with better things.. treat yourself all that you can to things that you enjoy.. this will help to keep you strong... fortunately you don't have long to wait. Everyone here understands how difficult this is to be facing and we are all here with advice and support to help get you through it.. I will be wishing loads that this turns out to be a minor thing and that soon it will all be behind you.. All the best.. Inka xxx
