Hi, I've been participating in some threads here but this is the first one I have started. I got an ultrasound result last week showing that my right ovary is >10 cm, and have been scrambling around trying to get more testing and get surgery scheduled. Well, today I went to see a gynecologic oncologist and I am feeling at least cautiously optimistic for now. My CA-125 results came back in the normal range (23) so that is very encouraging, and the doctor said that it felt like a cyst to him - although of course can't tell until it is removed and tested. I am scheduled for a CAT scan Oct 7 and for surgery Oct 13. So at least I am calming down for now and happy that things are moving forward. The doctor is head of the women's cancer center at the hospital and I have far more confidence in him than in the gyno I originally was seeing. So, so far so good!

Hi Catrice:
This is great news, as most of these masses are cysts! Ovarian cancer is rare. I really hope that this is the case for you. Please keep us posted throughout and let us know the results. We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers! XOX Susan Wales

Nice to have you share with us. I too hope that this surgery proves to be the answer to your question, and that the mass proves to be benign. I had never had any surgery when I was first diagnosed. It surely felt good that I felt very comfortable with the woman who was my surgeon.
I will be thinking positive things and hugs are sent your way, lindamae

I had the surgery on Tuesday and now I am home from the hospital. It was a benign cyst! The doctor said, it was basically empty, a mucinous cyst was what he called it. Quite large, maybe the size of a canteloup. He took out the right ovary and tube and also my appendix for some reason. Anyway I am recovering and feeling a little better every day. Thanks for all the support here, I wish everyone the best.

Dear Cat: So happy to hear your wonderful news! You are very blessed. Sometimes ovarian cysts can develop into cancer so that's probably why he took out the other items. They do this routinely in OVCA surgery . . . it's called debunking. I'm sure you are going to be absolutely fine! I hope you have a quick recovery. With our good news, I'm sure you're overjoyed. What a relief!
Love and Hugs! Susan Wales

I did some reading to try to figure out what the doctor said about the appendix possibly being involved, and found that often mucinous tumors or cysts will occur in both the appendix and one or both ovaries, and in some cases start in the appendix and spread to the ovary. So probably that was what he was talking about, and the reason for the appendectomy. Now I will have some things to ask him about on my follow-up visit in two weeks.
