Claustrophobic

I finally finished my Chemo treatments for Stage 1A Ovarian Cancer and Doc wants a CAT scan. I am claustrophobic and fear the proceedure even though I understand the diagnostic benefits. My anxiety level is so high that I doubt that sedation would even work. What do you suggest for me to overcome my fear of tight spaces in order to be tested?

" CT scans don't bother me at all so I am probably not the best person to answer you. I've had multiple CTs so I guess I'm used to them. I do think that the one you will have should confirm that your treatment has worked and you will find no evidence of disease (NED). I would look forward to getting this news. Best wishes, Janet "

" Well I am not claustrophobic but I do know that a big issue is building your self up about it. You need to relax, don't get ahead of your self on this. The scan takes less then a few min. and it is not closed in. The circle part is maybe a foot long.. 2 at best. Your head sticks out one end and your legs the other. A pet scan is like 2 of those together and the MRI is the one that most people need an anxiety medication. Think of the scan as that last test to get through this. You've handled chemo and other huge issues. You can do this! Maybe do a treat for your self afterwards, that way you have something to look forward to for after. Ask for a relaxent to take a hour before you go from your Dr. Have someone that keeps you calm with you when you go. You're going to do great. The rest of the day just have a blast! Go shopping or something. Best of luck. ~Renee "

" Thank you Janet and Renee. I feel a little silly getting worked up over this after what I endured with the Chemo. However, it isn't always easy to control fear and anxiety. Just knowing that my head will be sticking out has made all the difference. Thank you! "

" You might ask your doctor to find a lab that has a machine that it is considerably more open than normal.

Best of luck to you. You will be getting great news from the test results so keep your mind on being cancer free!

Blessings!
