Advice:
What can I expect when receiving chemo?

Last week I underwent a hysterectomy for endometrial cancer. Following the surgery, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer which had spread to one lymph node. The doctors also did a stomach wash were they found some cancer cells. The doctors recommended aggressive chemotherapy (two ports one in the chest and one in the stomach) and radiation.

I start chemotherapy next week. I will be on a 21 day cycle with chemo administered on day 1, 2 and 7. If anyone has received such treatment please let me know what to expect. Thanks ….

" Hi!

Can't tell you what to expect other than the symptoms of chemo. Depending on the type of chemo, I would check out this site where they list info on the different chemo for ovarian cancer.

During my mother's treatment, she has suffered loss of hair and appetite, only minimal nausea, because the drugs for it are miraculous, exhaustion, a metal taste in her mouth, a 30 pound plus weight loss, loss of memory (chemo brain), some loss of hearing. Her biggest struggle her last 9 chemo treatments was her low white blood cell and red cell counts. Her first round she had no problem with red count, but this time she had trouble with both.

This said, Mother has done really well, and has still been very active. She naps daily, which helps her tremendously. Also, my mother is 82 years-old, although she's a very young 82 and in tremendous shape and health, except for the cancer.

One of the greatest boosts Mother has experienced are the protein milkshakes she has daily. These are made from the meal replacement powder, MET-RX that we have purchased from the health food store, on the advice of her doctor. Since she began these, she has had an extra boost of energy. I highly recommend it.

Love and Hugs!

" Everyone one is diffirent. But I have included some sites that you may want to check out if you have not already. They were very helpful for to me. I had a really great doctor and nurse who I could call and ask questions. Some of the things that I exprience were nauesa, fatigue chemo brain (forgetfullness), hair loss, loss of appaitate, constipation (from antinausea meds) food just tasted funny and itching. I stayed away from ketchup, spaghetti sauce because they taste funny. I was on taxol and carboplatin for the first 3 cycles and due to the itching (allergic reaction) from the taxol I was switched to taxatere.
I hope this helps some but check out the following websites. Don't feel bad about asking for help and support. We are here if you need us. Good luck on you treatments.

" We are truly individuals when it comes to the way we respond to chemotherapy. I also had both ports originally. I can't say what you will experience...and think that the best thing that you can do is stay on this site. That way, if something seems unusual, or scary you have the chance to express yourself to those who know what it's like.
Amazing support system!!!
I hope that things go well for you. Many hugs, lindamae "
