Advice:
Inconclusive PET scan

I was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer in January, have completed surgery and 8 cycles of chemo. My CA-125 had consisently gone done (from 1800 to 12) After the last cycle of chemo I had a PET scan. There are 3 spots too small to measure and my CA-125 has doubled to 27.My doc says it might be inflammation or it might be recurrent cancer. Any thoughts? I am trying to stay positive until I get a repeat blood work after 3 weeks.

" CA-125 fluctuates, so it is usually no cause for alarm unless it skyrockets out of sight . . . . above normal. I would not be alarmed until they discover the cause, which I'm sure they will soon.

Please know that we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. If the cancer does return, they have plenty of treatments and different types of chemo to chose from today.

Have a beautiful day!

Love and Hugs!

" I know my doctors want to see three consecutive rises in CA125 followed by a scan before they decide whether a recurrence has ocrurred.. Best of luck to you with this and we are all here for you.. Inka xxx "

" Hi
My CA125 level was 7500 when diagnosed in 5/08. Currently it`s down to 18 due to Avastin/Gemzar infusions. My oncologist feels that they can keep my ovca at bay with these drugs. However, it`s been 14 months of numerous drugs that I was resistant to, which caused my CA levels to constantly fluctuate. I`ve learned that the CA test is very sensitive and shows antigens before the scans are able to find them measurable.
Lots of love,
xxLinda "

" I have three areas that we can see on a scan. My recurrence began with some jumps in CA1225 and they were quite big jumps. From 30 to 50 to over one hundred, etc.. So, as Inka says, they have to see more than one test to feel it is recurrence. My "spots" haven't gotten bigger in over a year...but then, I have been on chemo off and on during this time.
For you, I am hoping this doesn't indicate recurrence. On the positive side, however, it can be treated like a "chronic disease" and doesn't mean the end of life. Many hugs and sending good thoughts your way. I will check back after the 18th to see what they diagnosed. Whatever the case, we are all on your side here!!!

" Well, I have the results of my CA-125 from Friday. The value is 268! So it has gone up tenfold in 4 weeks. I see my gyn/onc on Tuesday. I am sure he will have a plan to attack this. I am also considering a trip to Sloan-Kettering to get their thoughts.

" Dear Michelle:

Thanks so much for letting us know the results. And yes, go to Sloan Kettering if you can. They are one of the top cancer hospitals in the USA . . . second only to M.D. Andersen in Houston. Also, send a message to Linda Heff in this group. She is a patient there, who has made remarkable progress after having a resistance to one of the traditional chemo's. There are alternative chemo's. You will certainy be in our heart and prayers! The women at DS offer tremendous supprot and information.
