I have a family history of ovarian cancer/cells. Can I opt to have a hysterectomy without being diagnosed myself?

" Hi there -- my mom is currently being treated for stage IIIc ovarian cancer. My sisters and I questioned her oncologist about ourselves and he said that the gene testing could show if we are at risk and if we are, we would be advised to have a hysterectomy without cancer diagnosis, to decrease our chances. The gene testing is very expensive, though, and you'd need to check with your insurance company to see if they would cover it with a diagnosis of cancer. good luck! "

" Im not sure about US but in the UK, if you have 2 close (1st line) relatives with a specific cancer...they will do gene testing and carry out surgery without symptoms. Its too late for me now as I already have OVCA 1C but had I have known this a few years ago, I would have been tested. Apparently here in UK, it takes a long time for the genetic testing to be complete.

I would certainly ask the questions though..

Good luck
xx "

" My mother's doctor explained that sometimes the cancer isn't genetic, so make sure you have the testing before you do anything drastic. My mother's cancer turned out not to be genetic, and we were told we were not at risk. I hope the same is true for you! "
