I'm not able to find my balance. I lean against chairs, walls, counter tops--anything to help me feel steady. When I lay down I feel like I'm moving, like I'm falling. While sitting in a chair I sway from side to side. Sometimes I have flashes of severe panic because I get scared. I have severe numbness and tingling all over--even my face. (no it's not stroke symptoms). I feel like I have my finger stuck in an electrical outlet all the time--waves of tiny shocks go through me. It is painful. My doctor assures me it is nerve damage from chemo. I can't sleep tonight, so I though I'd ask for help.

Oh Rhoda, I am so sorry you are going thru that. It sounds like you have Vertigo. I had that many, many years ago, (not related to Chemo). It had something to do with an inner ear infection. My doc at the time put me on some medication for Vertigo and it eventually went away. The numbness I am sure must be Neuropathy that most likely will go away with time. I am sure it will all go away with time. I used to get what felt like electric shock waves in my toes. It is gone now, but I get a little numbness once in awhile in my toes. It comes and goes. Maybe if you could exersise a little, even if it is just to take a little walk everyday, I am sure it will help. I don't know if this helps you, but I do wish you the best and hope you feel better soon.

Thank you so much for your support. I've had inner ear infection in the past, perhaps I have another. I hope my oncologist can offer some relief--my appointment is Jan. 23rd. I will take a short walk today as you suggested. Sometimes, I forget to do the obvious. I had a little numbness prior to chemo, but chemo brought on a whole new meaning to numbness and nerve pain. Lyrica causes some dizziness too.
Your message was a tremendous help! It's so good to have someone who knows and understands. I hope you are feeling well. I hope you get the voucher for the new car soon too. What fun that will be.

I think this is an inner ear infection too.. especially as you have had it before. I haven't had this but I do have a friend that keeps on getting it. It isn't to do with the chemo and I think you should go to see your doctor before the 23rd as it is something that can be cleared up with medication and infections shouldn't be left to thrive.
The numbness and nerve damage, I also think will go in time.. Exercise is very important and I found Omega3 oil or cod liver oil helps the fine nerves to repair more quickly.. Lots of vitamin C, fruit and vegetables too.. antioxidant type things.... All the best to you xxx

Thanks for your post. It's GOOD to know that you think the nerve damage will heal in time. My oncologist and endocrinologist do not share the same opinion re: the cause of neuropathy. I went to another speciaiist (neurologist) who was of the opinion it was due to chemo. So that left me with two out of three professional opinions believing the cause to be chemo drugs. My endo prescribes Lyrica and he seems to be the best specialist I have. My diabetes has been a major issue with complications for years. As for the balance thing--you're right--I could get that checked out before Jan 23rd. I just get tired of so many different doctors and all the appointments. I hope you're feeling well.
Thanks for your support. Rhoda & Scottie

Hi -
I had a terrible time with the Neuropathy after the chemo. When I would stand I had no feeling in my legs...sort of like being the 'Tin man" in the wizard of OZ. I was referred to a neurologist by my GYN onc and there are medications they can recommend if you have pain..though nothing that brings the feeling back. They also did an MRI & MRA of the head and neck and blood tests to rule out other causes. I am getting better and believe it or not PT helped me learn balancing exercises to compensate for the loss of feeling. The nerve function will come back over time. I know like you first hand that the time can't come soon enough!! :) I wish you the best. Kellie

Rhoda,
I am sorry to here you are having a hard time. This too will pass. My Onc suggested that I take L-glutamine and b 12 for the neuropathy. I have had 2 chemo treatments and so far my neuropathy is very mild. Also make sure you are getting rest and drinking enough water. If you like massage, try that. I find that it helps me with the pain. I hope you starte feeling better.
