Aortic Valve Insufficiency

In the past year,I have had two echocardiograms. The first disclosed mild to severe aortic insufficiency. the cardiologist suggested a Cardiac Catheterization. That was performed with good results. My second echocardiogram was peformed 6 months later. The results disclosed some improvements with aorta dimensions and the ejection fraction at 70%. (was 50%). 55% is considered normal. Cardiologist had first suggested monitoring Echos every 6 months, saying
that a replacement valve may not be needed for 10 to 20 years. Now, he suggests surgury soon. He did not answer any of my questions about my prognosis change.

" An up date on my Aortic Insufficiency. I the last year I have had 4 more Echos to monitor the "leakage" through my Aortic Valve. My second opinion Cardiologist found that the left ventricle wall was dilating and thinking by almost 9mm. This is a different sign that the left ventricle is working to hard to pump the regurgent blood back through the valve. So I meet with my Cardiothoracic Surgeon. He will use a tissue (pig/cow) valve for replacement. Surgery date ..Aug. 4. 2008.
I will update after the surgery. "

" I had Open Heart Aortic Valve Replacement surgery 3 months ago. This was a major surgery,as most people know. The surgery went well (7 Hrs),however the recovery was demanding and 4 days in ICU. I was released after 7 days in the hospital. I then received 3 weeks of in home therapy and nursing care. I felt very weak for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. It was not until I started Cardiac Rehab,at 8 weeks that I felt stronger. the Cardiac Rehab has been a big help for me,providing mental and phyical strength. Now, I feel normal in strength at 14 sessions of Rehab. Will continue up to a total of 36 sessions. I'm very happy that I had a "strong minded" Cardiologist that would not let me "talk myself" out of having this surgery. I probably would not be here to write this comment. "
