actonel

Hi, I'm new here and just have one question. I just had a bone density test and my T score was -2.3. I'm 44 years old, and the bone loss is most likely due to having had to take prednisone for a long period of time (I have lupus) which I am no longer taking.

My doctor wants me to take once-a-month actonel. I've read about some really awful side effects from this drug. My question is this... well actually, I have a couple of questions.

1) Has anyone taken Actonel, and if so, how did you do on it?
2) In your opinion, is it worth taking if my score is only -2.3, I'm 44, and not taking prednisone anymore?

I don't like taking meds unless it's really necessary. My doctor thinks it is necessary, but from my experience, all doctors think whatever med they are prescribing is necessary.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sailynn

" I also have osteoporosis and have done alot of research on overcoming it without the poison that doctors prescribe. Do a search for natural cures and you will find that Vit. D, Magnesium, Vitamin K and calcium will make your bones start regenerating. The drugs just keep them from the breaking apart process but do nothing to make them heal, they actually just harden your porous brittle bones. Good luck and research the drugs for yourself. My Dr. wants me to take a Reclast infusion. No poison for me thanks. "

" Thanks for the advice. I will do some research on natural cures. I really don't want to take Actonel, but I also want strong bones.

" I have also taken Actonel, for many years. I wound up with severe osteoporosis and Vitamin D deficiency, several broken bones, etc. I took Fortero shots for 1 year and that did not work. Next I will try Reclast and high levels of Vitamin D together, and hope for better results. I also have Lupus and don't know what part that has played. Thanks to good doctors for helping me out. "

" Taking those drugs like Actonel also leaves you open to jaw damage if you have to have Dental work done. I had to stop taking it because I needed extensive dental work and the oral surgeon wouldn't touch me if I was on it.

Also, studies are showing that some of these drugs are actually taking bone AWAY!!! So I'm not taking it anymore. Going the natural way makes more sense. God bless. Lee "

" Thanks for your input. After much research, I have decided to not take Actonel for now. I will try increasing my calcium and Vit D to the recommended levels for people at risk for osteoporosis and see if that helps. There does seem to be a lot of conflicting advice on the Internet mostly regarding diet.

Has anyone found changing your diet has helped? If so, what did you change about your diet? "

" Hello Sailynn,

I have taken once a month Actonel for six months for my osteopenia. Having done so, I can honestly say that I am very happy with the results. Before taking this drug I had trouble lifting objects weighing over 30 pounds without having joint pain later. Now I can lift heavy bags again. I also have less pain my lower back now than I did six months ago.

After reading all sorts of horrible things about Actonel on the Internet, I delayed taking it for three months after my doctor suggested that I consider it.

I had read blogs on the Internet from users who said that it gave them horrible flu-like symptoms. I had mild flu-like symptoms about nine hours after taking the first dose. After that first dose, I never had any other symptoms.

I rarely leave these comments, but I felt obligated to say something positive about the drug. I also changed over from chewable calcium to Citracal Petites at the advice of my doctor.

I am really glad that I made these changes. If I had continued to have the flu-like symptoms, I would have discontinued taking the drug. I have talked to people who took Foxomax or Boniva and they have had good results too.

Follow the directions carefully if you decide to take Actonel. Best wishes. "
