I am 45 years old and was diagnosed with Odteoporosis 4 months ago. I was given an RX for Fosamax but didnt take it until yesterday. I was really agaonst taking one more pill but my fracture risk was so high I decided to gove it a ashot. Has anyone experienced headaches as a side effect? About an hour after I took it I got a headache that got worse by the minute. Advil did nothing. I was in bed by 8 pm and woke up today still with a headache...just milder. Do I have this to look forward to every month? If so I might just take my chances with Calcium and Vit D and hope for the best.

You should call your doctor and let him/her know what happened. He/she can send you a Rx for a different medication, like Actonel for example. Everyone reacts different to medication but they are suppossed to help and not make you feel worse. I took one pill of Fosomax and had a bad reaction but when switched to Actonel I had no side effects. It worked for me. Definitely, check with your doctor!!

I was on Fosomax for awhile. Gave me terrible acid reflux - which to this day I have. These are strong meds. I would try Actonel or Boniva (only have to take once a month) instead of every week. The thing with Fosomax is they now have a generic for it and the cost is minimal. Maybe your body is getting used to it. Unless you have like Kaiser, the cost for these pills are really high. I do think since you already have osteoporosis, you should be taking something. I am in the osteopena stage. I had to quit both but am able to exercise and have to do more of that. I hope things work out for you. SUE

OMG - You asked a loaded question. I was on Fosamax for over a year and just recently took myself off of it with the doctor's knowledge. I am now on Boniva experiencing similar bad side effects. I take a lot of meds due to Leukemia and a Bone Marrow Transplant. My doctors and I asssumed that the side effects were from my other meds, but after many test, procedures....and information that I received on Daily Strength, I went to the doctors with questions. So, yes Fosamax gave me headaches but far worse was teeth sensitivity, numbness in toes and fingers, nausea, severe pains in my upper abdomen...check it out and be careful. It is very poweful. I learned about the bad effects right here on Daily Strength. I had no idea prior to taking it. I developed Osteoperosis as a result of the transplant so I am also in a quandry as to another answer. Oh yea, make sure if you have any dental work that you let your dentist know because it can cause a deterioration of the jaw bone and your teeth can fall out. Not as rare as the company claims, I know of two people who have had it happen. Let me know what your doc says.
