Yearly IV Reclast

I went to my dentist today for the first time after receiving IV Reclast. He told me that tooth extraction puts one at risk for osteonecrosis of the jaw. It doesn't always happen, but the risk is higher with this medication, more so than with oral meds for osteoporosis. I'm thankful that my teeth are in good repair and will work at keeping them that way.

Thanks for responding. I didn't like the idea of it myself, but my bones were getting thinner on Fosamax. Most recently, the dentist said that I'd be fine as long as I didn't need teeth extracted. I have been told by three trust doctors though (endocrinologist, oncologist, and internist) that they felt it safe for me to take. Hopefully, the dentist was overreacting.

Went to a new doc today and he also suggested the IV drug. He felt jaws would be ok. I'll hold off for a little while until I get my other issues straightened out and then I'll think about it. Do you have any side effects like heartburn or hormonal changes?

I'm 71 so hormones are not an issue. I get heartburn occasionally, but more likely due to what I've eaten. The endocrinologist said that there would be no problem with heartburn from the Reclast.

I saw the endocrinologist the other day. My bloodwork was all good. She again said that the scare about IV Reclast is from the media and poorly informed dentists. Because I've been on biphosphinates for more than eight years, depending on my next blood & urine work in the next four months, I may be eligible for a drug holiday for a year.

I had reclast yesterday. Has any one else had any experiences with it?
Any heartburn, afib, etc. I am under the impression that these side effects last only for a short time if any......

I had IV Reclast once last October without problem. I will most likely have my next dose this coming October. I see the endocrinologist in September and, depending on blood and urine tests, will either be scheduled for it in October or have a "biphosphinate holiday" for a year.

I was referred out to a specialist in Portland, OR a couple of years ago and they recommended Reclast. My health care provider would not provide it until recently. I requrested reclast but they denied me and told me to stay on Foxamax. I think a one time a year hit would be good. It doesn't seem to cause a lot of adverse side affects. Nice to have some folks on it an hear from them about their experience.
