I am post menopausal and just had a bone density test. My doctor told me I was at risk for fractures and therefore wanted to put me on Fosomax. I am highly sensitive to drugs and after reading online the problems people were having with the side effects, I am scared to death to even try it because of being so sensitive to drugs. An example of just how sensitive I am is, I have epilepsy and doctors had to take me off of all medications for this because the side effects were worse than my seizures and this is just one example. I have tried so many medications in the past and then had to quit or reduce the dosage because of the side effects being so bad. Another example is, I can only take two pills a week of my anti-depressant. If I take any more, I am walking around like a "zombie" and feel so drugged up. I have been taking Citracal +D for several years but apparently it isn't enough. Does anyone have any suggestions of a supplement or vitamin that I can take that will help in place of the Fosomax? Thanks for your time.

" I am also highly allergic. Fosamax is not good for me because I have GERD (acid reflux). I do research all the time. If you have GERD, then calcium will be pulled from your bones. So, the calcium I was taking wasn't getting to where I needed it. Now I am on an alkaline diet which is best for Osteo. You can check with your doctor or a nutritionist. However, you seem to be going with you gut rather than your doctor. Sometimes that is best.
Also, the latest study shows that we need double the magnesium than calcium. That's the very latest. For the longest time it was the other way around.
I have found that it is I who needs to be proactive in my own treatment, working hand in hand with my doctor and speaking up when I need to. After twelve years, I am two inches shorter and at high risk for a traumatic break. This has not been a fun ride. Best of luck to you. "

" I was dx with Osteoporosis in 2006. I have been on Fosmax for about 6 months. I do have GERD and concern about how this drugs effects me. I have been hospitalized because of getting so sick on stomach and getting dehydrated many times in the past. I am dx with MS, ME/CFS, TMJ and so many allergies. I am also sensitive to drugs.

I have decided to used natural progesterone cream with no herbs in it. I have done research on hormonal imbalance. I quit HRT. I have been sick on my stomach and closely watching the side effects of Fosamax. I also take calcium and Vitamin D supplements. The good effects on the natural progesterone cream are listed below along with Estrogen effects. Maybe this is something that can help you also as it does increase bone density.

Progesterone Effects:

Protects against breast cysts
Helps use fat for energy and keep it off hips
Natural diuretic (water pill)
Natural anti-depressant
Facilitates thyroid hormone action
Normalizes blood clotting
Increases libido
Normalizes blood sugar levels
Normalizes zinc and copper levels
Restores proper cell oxygen levels
Prevents endometrial cancer
Helps prevent breast cancer
Increases bone building

Estrogen Effects:

Stimulates breasts cysts
Increases body fat storage
Salt and fluid retention
Depression and headaches
Interferes with thyroid hormone
Increases blood clotting and risk of stroke
Decreases libido (sex drive)
Impairs blood sugar control
Loss of zinc and retention of copper
Reduced oxygen level in all cells
Increased risk of endometrial cancer
Increased risk of breast cancer
Helps decrease bone loss slightly "

" Hi, thanks for your post.
I have been researching progesterone and it sounds quite promising with hardly any side effects. it is mentioned a couple of books I have been reading, apparently its not prescribed very often now, due to all these other drugs. i.e. bisphosphonates. I cannot take those at all. I am going to mention this when I see the doc.
Thanks "

" Here are a couple of supplements to check into. These products are called Isotonix, the most absorbable product on the market 90 to 95%. This makes for tremendous results. I have been working with health professionals as well as individuals and have had effective results.

There is plenty of research on the website and clinical studies to support the products and all scientifically based. Hope this helps. "
