I am post menopausal and just had a bone density test. My doctor told me I was at risk for fractures and therefore wanted to put me on Fosomax. I am highly sensitive to drugs and after reading online the problems people were having with the side effects, I am scared to death to even try it because of being so sensitive to drugs. An example of just how sensitive I am is, I have epilepsy and doctors had to take me off of all medications for this because the side effects were worse than my seizures and this is just one example. I have tried so many medications in the past and then had to quit or reduce the dosage because of the side effects being so bad. Another example is, I can only take two pills a week of my anti-depressant. If I take any more, I am walking around like a "zombie" and feel so drugged up. I have been taking Citracal +D for several years but apparently it isn't enough. Does anyone have any suggestions of a supplement or vitamin that I can take that will help in place of the Fosomax? Thanks for your time.

If your doctor is suggesting Fosamax, you probably need it. Is this the same doctor who has treated you in the past with all your medication side effects? If he/she is, then he would be aware of the problems and hopefully steer you on the right path. If this is a different doctor, be sure he knows your past history and potential for side effects.

Hi I took two tablets prescribed by my GP without any prior discussion or consultation.I was prescribed Alendronic Acid did some research and low and behold its Fosamax. I am 55 and diagnosed in July this year they made me so ill the pain was like something I had never experienced before or since. I stopped taking them against my Doctors advice. For me I would sooner take my chances against even more potential horrendous problems. It is your health your body and your choice.
Tons of hugs to you.... feel exactly as you feel its so very difficult isnt it XXXXXXX

Thank you everyone for your response. It was mentioned that my doctor should know what is best for me but I have to question that because it is the same doctor who has prescribed all these medications that I have had such severe reactions to and he has known for a long time about my medication sensitivity problem. That is why I feel it is best I let my body make the decision not my doctor. I would rather take the risk of fractures than to take the risk of severe side effects. I thought I would try something over the counter if I can find anything that will work. Over the counter products don't bother me. Any suggestions out there? Thanks again!

All I can tell you to do is get some Calcium/vitD,there are other supplements that have boron and magnesium in, also Vit K. Happybones has been reading about Vit K being as good as fosomax,we are going to try it. I will give you this website,I order my supplements from them, have a look and see what you think.

ChaCha1, you ask if I have a sensitive stomach, yes, I've afraid I do so that's another reason to stay away from FosoMax. I have decided to stay away from it and others like it and take my chances considering the circumstances. I will just continue on with what I've been doing except I will check into the Vitamin k as was mentioned in this thread. Thank you again everyone for your suggestions.

Hi, I have stopped the fosomax now as I got some nasty blister things on my gums,I dont know whether it is related or not but it was enough for me to stop, I am just taking the calcium/vit d and /vit k now, I managed to get a supplement with the three in together.
I am waiting to go to my diabetic specialist now so I will see what he says.

Hey bonny hows u doin.......... sorry to hear about your gums I too had the same problem with Fosamax so glad that you have stopped taking it. Also I feel from a psychological view point the worry that taking this medicine caused me I feel so much better mentally knowing that it is not in my system anymore waiting to cause havoc.
Wishing us all a very healthy 2009 XXXX
