How old (or young) at diagnosis?

Hello everyone, I was just wondering how old everyone else was at the time of diagnosis. I was diagnosed with Osteo in my hips and wrists (as well as Osteopenia everywhere else) at the age of 28. I'm going on 32 now, and haven't had a bone scan since diagnosis. I will have to ask my pain specialist if he can schedule me for one soon, but as I understand it, a patient should get a scan on the same machine every time to have consistently accurate results. My last (and first) scan was done when I lived in Albuquerque, and now I'm in Vegas, and may move to Reno soon. I have also been told that since I am of child-bearing age and plan to have children I cannot take any of the Rx things like Boniva or Fosamax. So I take calcium and vitamin D. What are other young women with Osteo taking?

" Hello! I had my first Dexa when I was 31 years old. After that I had the scan done about every two- three years. At the time I had Osteopenia in my hip and spine. I was prescribed Fosomax but it hurt me. Then, I was on Actonel with no obvious side effects. I stopped taking the medication for a while to have my third child. On May 2006, (after I stopped breastfeading) the Dexa showed increased risk fracture for my hip (still osteopenia) and osteoporosis in my spine. I started again on Actonel until this week. At my appointment just this week, the doctor took me off the medication since I have improve my spine back to osteopenia almost normal. Although my hip was about the same, the doctor said it is not known for someone my age about the long term side effects of the bisphosphates. So, he wants me to just take calcium and vitamin D along with weight bearing excercises and check my bones again in a year and a half.
I know it is hard to find info within our age group so I hope this help. The best advice I will give you is to work out so you can built up bone mass (along with healthy muscles)and eat food rich in calcium and vitamin D which helps your body absorb calcium among other good things. "

" I was diagnosed with Ostepenia when I was 18. I have not gone back in to the doctor due to not having ins. I am now 25 and I am now in a lot of pain in my neck and lower back to the point I can't have anyone touch me. I have been trying to take calcium and Vitamin D but they make me sick. Hopefully after the holidays I will be able to make it in to get another scan done. "

" Hi, I had BP-DDS surgery in 03. I knew it made me more susceptible to Osteo but then other problems like Lubron shot and poor vitamin habits now I'm at Osteopenia-age 34. They will wait until next year to see the rate of loss before other meds...now I'm just on Calcium and Vit. D. having side-effects but I don't know if it's the Severe Iron Deficiency and massive Iron I'm on. "

" I'm 36 and was diagnosed with osteoporosis on Christmas Eve. I went to the dr. for mid back pain thats been going on for months and I just couldn't take it anymore so he sent me for x -rays, then for dexa scan and I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor. my L1-L4 -2.57 my left hip is -2.54 , I can't believe it. He wanted to start me on med's ASAP,....I tried Fosamax,... hated it! I am taking calium + D and will give Actonel a try.
Osteoporosis DOES cause PAIN! I get a little annoyed reading & hearing that it only causes pain if you fracture a bone. That is such BS!! Any Dr. who tell's you that,... you need to run! "

" I was diagnosed when I was 34. I went through meno at the age of 16, I'm 60 now and have severe osteo. I've just found out that I lost another 2" in height (down from my original height of 5' 4"), I'm now 5' .05". My back muscles are so pulled that I have muscle spasms all the time.

" I just started Boniva this month.
I was on Miacalcin nasal spray.
Then I learned it didn't stop bone breaks so I stopped taking it.
I read about many of the different drugs and decided I wanted to take Boniva and requested this from my doc.
I will take it once monthly.
I was stunned that there wasn't any side effect. So that's great.

I've become shorter too.

How did you go into menopause at age 16? "
