Hey there!
This is from a previous post in this community....would love to hear everyones experience... The nasal spray used for osteoporosis is calcitonin (trade name miacalcin or fortical) 1) It is UNRELATED to the bisphophonates (fosamax, boniva, etc) and works by antagonizing the effects of parathyroid hormone which results in inhibition of osteoclastic bone resorption 2) It is NOT recommended as first line treatment for osteoporosis because it does not result in the fracture reduction and bone mineral density increases that the bisphosphonates do. WOW!
This sounds like it is useless. My doc lied to me. She said it would work. I don't see the point of taking it. I asked more than once because my gutt told me I couldn't trust this med. I feel set up for bone failure. This makes me so angry. I don't see the purpose for it to be on the market with this above statement.

I was reading on the link of Miacalcin. It didn't seem to say anything about Osteoporosis. I am not sure that I understood clearly what it does.
I do not believe my doc has ever tested me for too much calcium in my blood either. That is one of the things the link spoke about. It talked about bone loss due to pagent's, and drug induced Osteo. Mine is drug induced. I've never read up on Osteo. I think I will now. My mother has it and it's not due to steroids or anything like mine. Now, I feel afraid. DOes anyone have experience with this so called med? I don't think I've ever such an emotional response concerning a med or treatment. Gosh, I just feel like I've been put into a position to be in serious trouble as I get older. I believe, I'll talk to my pharmacist sinces she always uses straight talk, tells the truth and gives me the pro's and con's. Thanks O for saying something.

In response to your question about whether anyone had taken Miacalcin, I took it for a few months (after taking fosomax for 2 or 3 months and getting reflux for the first time in my life that kept me awake at night), and then got even worse reflux than I had with fosomax (felt like lava and also kept me up all night). I stopped both and have gone with Vit. D, lots of vitamins and minerals, walking, watching diet so that I concentrate on maintaining an alkaline system (hard to do), but I do worry because my osteoporosis has gotten steadily worse. I do have a neighbor who had terrible results with fosomax (ended up in hospital) but good results with Miacalcin in terms of no really bad symptoms and better bone density scores. So it can vary from individual to individual.
So, it might be worth trying, but be forwarned it can cause severe digestive issues. I was told I should then take medicine to counteract the reflux, but I declined that option as that would further mess up my digestive system. Working on eliminating an acid diet is very important as an acid diet leeches calcium from the bones. Taking some natural hormones can also help. Exercise is crucial. Do as much reading as you can on line as there's a lot of good info out there and find a doctor who is knowledgeable about natural alternatives. Good luck and wish me luck too!!

Yes, I also took Miacalcin (actually, Fortical that is the generic). Nausea, bloating, frozen muscles, bone pain. My doctor, who has had good results with calcitonin, took a blood test and told me it was not working. I stopped it and am now going the natural way under the direction of an Alternative Medicine MD. I do know people who use it and it doesn't have any bad side effects for them. Maybe it's just mt. Let us know your experience with it.

I would love to hear from Dr.Orrange concerning this medication and particularly about vibration therapy with Juvent 1000. I cannot take the IVs or any of the bisphosonates because of gastro and periodontal problems. Worst Pills, Best Pills is very leery of Evista and Forteo and thinks Miacalcin is nearly useless. My Dexa IMPROVED over the last year in spite of the fact that I refused to take these medications. I still have severe osteo....and severe reservations about all of these drugs.
