Hello Everyone,

Let me introduce myself, most people call me Babs, they do this because of my initials and just add a S at the end of it. I am not sure why, but it fits so I don't mind at all. So I don't mind if everyone here calls me Babs, at least I know who I am ;-) LOL

Anyways, I came to this group because last year after turning 33 I started having a lot of back pain and hip pain. Couldn't figure it out through x-rays or MRI's or CAT scans, nothing. Well my doctor finally did a bone density scan on me and found out that I have osteoporosis. He was very shocked about this considering the fact that I am so "young". Why doctors seem to think that diseases have "ages" to them I don' t know why. I guess it's in their text books so it must be true.

Well my doctor found out wrong. I have it and it's only going to get worse the older I get. It scares the heck out of my family because with my Fibromyalgia I tend to lose my balance a lot and stumble and sometimes fall. So when I do start to stumble or I do fall my family tends to flip out a little bit.

I want to get a little more understanding of the disease and how fast it grows, how fast it's going to take to get to the point I can't walk. Stuff like that. I want to know more about it from people that actually have it.

I know that I am "young" but I don't care what text books say, I have it and I am stuck with it till the day I die!

Thank you for letting me introduce myself.

Babs

" Hi, Babs, and welcome to this Osteoporosis support site. It's not a very active board, but the people here are great. I hope that you are encouraged by being here.

I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but it's always better to know what's going on. I have a few questions for you. Has your vitamin d level been checked? My doctors have told me that vitamin d is very important for the bones. In fact, they told me to take supplemental calcium, magnesium, vitamin d3, and vitamin k2, at the same time, because they work more effectively together. I take this combination each morning. Also, because I couldn't handle once-a-month Actonel, my one doctor told me to take strontium citrate (a supplement) every evening. So I do that as well.

Another question is whether you have ever been checked for a gluten sensitivity? For me, I am on a gluten-free diet. If you are gluten sensitive, your body might not be absorbing all the necessary nutrients, which could make osteoporosis worse. Also, I know a few people with celiac disease, and once they were diagnosed and began eating a gluten-free diet, their fibromyalgia got better. I don't know if it would help you, but you could speak to your doctor about gluten. Anyway, best wishes to you and, again, welcome. "

" Nanny, thank you for the welcome. As far as your first question about my vitamins the only vitamin that I have that is low is my vitamin B12 which is supposed to help with the immune system. I do have a very weak immune system. I have been taking B12 for a while now and it really hasn't helped me in any way at all. All of my other vitamins have come back "normal." So I don't know what to say about that and I don't understand why I have Osteoporosis at such a young age, but i do know that the older I get the worse it will get. It kind of sucks. The doctors don't have me on any type of medication for it because they say it would do me no good because of my age. I don't get it, but I'm not the doctor so I guess I don't have to get it, lol.

As far as the gluten thing. I have never heard of that. What is that? I will do a little research into it and at my next doctors appointment I will bring it up. Until then though, I will just continue to do what I am and pray that I don't get any worse any time soon. :) "

" Gluten is a long-strand protein in wheat, rye, and barley, that is indigestible by humans. It doesn't hurt most people, but for some (like me) it causes problems. I only bring it up, because I like to have questions for my doctors and like to look at all possibilities. I hope that you get answers to the cause of your osteoporosis. "

" Thank you. I doubt that I will. It seems like with everything that is wrong with me the doctors really can't seem to give me a straight up answer. It's just "it's life and it happens to people, but we don't always know why". It's crazy because I hate not knowing why. I haven't been able to go to the doctor about this gluten thing yet, and I hope I remember it when I do.

I just figured with all the other "not at my age" illnesses that I have it's just another one to go along with it. Most people at 33 years old are a lot healthier than I am, but I am permanently disabled. Most people at this age aren't. In fact I haven't met many that are. I have so many illnesses that the doctors wonder how I stay alive lol

Osteoporosis was determined to be "mild" but I know the real truth behind that. I even asked if it would get worse the older I get and I got the answer "yes". I even asked if drinking and taking Vitamin D would help improve my changes of it going away or slowing the process down. I was told no because I have such a low immune system.

The doctor that found it basically told me that because of my immune system being so low that I am very susceptible to so many other illnesses. In fact, right now I am fighting off an Upper Respiratory Infection with an antibiotic.

I will look into this information and see what I can find. thank you again and I hope all is well with you.

" I have immune system issues also and take a colostrum supplement for it, as well as olive leaf extract and Lauricidin for my chronic Epstein Barr Virus. I have an autoimmune disease called Polymyositis. Several other people with my disease received help from IVIg treatments, but IVIg is a prescription and VERY expensive. I did research to see if there were any supplements that could help instead, and a couple doctors online had written that colostrum was a natural supplement that works like IVIg. I don't know if it would help you or not. "

" Here is a link from iHealthTube. It has a video about feeding energy to the immune system. I have not done so, but thought you might be interested in viewing it.

" I am new here too and getting really confused with these numbers and tests that people are talking about. I was diagnosed with osteo at 35 the only test I had was a bone scan. "
