my husband had his liver transplant sept. 2008, and everything went very well, now he is only on the prograf and prednisone and is very lucky for that, but he has had several episodes of confusion. It usually last 6- 8 hours and starts with him feeling sick then vomitting, he wanders around the house and his sentences are all with the wrong words, he's like an alzheimers patient, and he also gets the shakes, he's been to the hospital twice for this but they had no answers other than his electrolytes were out of balance,(magnesium and potassium), he takes supplements and i cook dinners incorporating plenty of healthy foods and hydrate him with gatorade and vitamin water, yet it still happens, prograf level is normal as well, are we missing something???

my friend is also on prograf, but has never experienced such on any of her meds luckily, however, it sounds as though he may be having tia's (transient ischemic attacks), or even mini-strokes - electrolyte imbalance can cause those symptoms and tia's/strokes if left unattended... just keep going back to the doctor/ER until they figure it out...
my friends biggest issue was bacterial infection in the drain tubes they left in her after transplant, as well as tiny bile duct leaks that led to bacterial infections, and eventually, a year after transplant, she needed reconstructive surgery on those bile ducts to correct the leakage. she was in the hospital every 2 weeks for as much as a week each time, for the first 8 months following transplant. it was so frustrating, because she would get a fever... and it always rose above 100, which was the max temp allowed without going to the hospital. we live in such a rural area that the local hospitals wouldn't touch her, no treatment, they would draw blood, and transport her by ambulance all the way to Rochester, 250 miles away from home, very very frustrating, especially because it was a simple bacterial infection, easily treated... Finally her team decided after the reconstruction was done and she was doing very well, that she could allow her temp to go to 101 before going to the hospital. she hasn't had any further issues, and now doesn't even have to have antiviral infusions anymore. We hope you guys figure this situation out soon, please let us know! Peace, Ann

thanks for the replies, we had his blood done again and the transplant team said he had a "happy liver", all levels were normal except the magnesium, it was 1.4 and they want him at 2.0 so that may be the cause, we increased his doses and will see, his ammonia was high the first time this happened and he went to the er, why would his ammonia still be going high post transplant?? and could he still take lactulose post transplant?? THANKS JAMIE

My husband is just a few months post liver transplant and thankfully doing very well. Our youngest is 4 yrs old. Every time I say something to him he asks "why?" or "how do you know that?" I have learned to take my 4yr old's relentless approach with the doctors. Keep asking those questions. Good luck to you and your husband.
