I have had low hemoglobin ever since my transplant in February. My iron is just fine. Does anyone else have this problem and do you have recommendations as to how to get my levels in to normal range? I have been taking in more protein. I get very tired and I am thinking the low hemoglobin level may be a cause of that problem. Thanks for your input.

Hello suzes, have you told your transplant team how you are feeling? Low hemoglobin can range from side effects of medication to bleeding. Even though we all are living life with organ transplants, each of our stories are unique. Always check your with transplant team with any concerns, they are the best source of information for you. Since my kidney transplant in 2001, I feel my transplant team is my best friend. They always show me compassion, no matter how small or big my concerns are. My first year out, we did adjust my medications more than we do now. Hopefully others here can offer suggestions to you. May you gain more energy every day and enjoy!

Hi suze, I had very low hemoglobin before my liver TX last sept. I had varices in my esophogus that were not bursts but just oozing a lot. I had no symptoms of bleeding into my stomache or anything just low hemoglobin and very pale weak and tired. I just wanted to pass that along.I would think your transplant team could help with this matter.

Thank you for your responses. I have talked to my transplant team and will again at my upcoming appointment. I did have 2 units of blood after the transplant and my hemoglobin did come up alittle. But hasn't changed now in a few months. I have to eat more protein I guess, but I do find that hard. I too have a wonderful transplant team. They become part of the family, don't they?

Were you on epogen before because you were anemic? I thought I heard or read that you can still be anemic after a transplant, sometimes the new kidney fixes that, sometimes not. I know I hate it when my blood count is low and I am dragging dragging.

I was not and am not anemic....so that is good. Like Tricia, I had a liver transplant. My kidneys are fine....so that good too! All seems fine, but I just can't get that hemoglobin up. Crazy thing!
