My sister has end stage renal failure three years ago and since then she has been on dialysis twice per week. I would live to give my sister one of my kidneys. I am afraid that I will not be given enough time off from work to complete the entire procedure. I live in england and she lives in jamaica. I would like to know how long the entire procedure will take to complete -- the testings, the operations and the recovery. Please if anyone know the answers to these questions could you let me know. Thanks

" Dear Kaylaj,
Don't fret my dear sister. It's a wonderful thing you are wanting to do for your sister and I am praying for you both.
I just received a kidney tranplant from my cousin in January. He was only in the hospital 1 day and took 1 week (5 days off of work). They remove the kidney laproscopically so the donor recovery time is quick. I wish you all the best and good luck.

" The testing is fairly extensive but should be measured in weeks not months.

Likely you'll have blood tests, x-rays of chest and then follow up to any abnormalities. My observation is its a reasonably good physical exam. Something you should get anywayh.

Once you've completed the pre-tests a normal vacation period should cover the rest.

And just think about it. If she starts to give you the usual sister troubles you can threaten to take the thing back. "

" My sister donated one of her kidneys to me in Oct. 2008. She was only in the hospital for 3 days and she had to have some tests the day before she was admitted for the donor surgery.

I live in Las Vegas, NV and she lives in a small town in Colorado. We were able to get our individual tests done through cooperating facilities that were in our own regions and then just met at the TX hospital for the actual surgery.

I still don't think she knows how much she has done for me or how much I appreciate it. It's so hard to put it into words. I wish I could give her so much but it just doesn't translate the same.

You truly are giving a great gift! "
