Advice:
Options after being denied liver transplant

Hi all,
Apologies for cross-posting this, but after originally posting in the Cirrhosis group I think this question/discussion belongs better here so I am re-posting.

Hi all,
My father has cirrhosis from many decades of alcoholism, which is now his major health problem in the aftermath of a suicide attempt which has severely weakened his body.

Unfortunately, the insurance company and/or the liver specialists have denied him for a liver transplant because of the suicide attempt. I can understand their logic for this, however I am wondering what other options we might have.

I don't feel my father is a suicide risk going forward - the attempt was mostly due to stress from a financial situation which we are currently taking care of. Can we go around the insurance company for a private or out-of-network option? Cost is somewhat of an issue, since my parents are filing for bankruptcy, but the rest of our family could potentially find a way to make this happen. We have several family volunteers for living donors, so hopefully organ availability would not be an issue.

I appreciate any thoughts/suggestions anyone might have.

" Has he considered going to another transplant center? Perhaps some different specialists might be willing to give him a chance if you explain the situation and can convince them that he is not a suicide risk.
Best wishes! "

" Thanks CarrieDawn. For the moment we are operating within the constraints of the insurance provider. Is it easy to consult with another transplant center to see what they think? How would we go about that and do you have any idea what such a consultation might cost (as it will be out-of-network)? "

" I have no idea how much it would cost as Medicare paid for all of my transplant expenses. I'm also not sure about how to go about finding another transplant center. There's a site called transplantbuddies(www.transplantbuddies.com) and I'm sure you could get some good answers there. I have read many posts there of people changing transplant centers. There afe a huge number of members and you are sure to get some good responses. Good luck! "

" My liver transplant according to my hospital bill was $130000.00 and that didn't include doctor fees. This was 20 years ago. I know your dad would not be at the top of the priority list unless he finds a doc and insurance to give him the go ahead. Even then it's very doubtful. :( Sorry, Sue "

" Go overseas taking your donor with you.

Medical care can actually be better since you're paying for it cash and money talks.

You'll be astonished at how little it costs. "
