Hi everyone,
I'm new to the group. I'm 20years old and had my first outbreak back in January, I got 7 sores at once. Since I had an outbreak I got a cold sore every 2 weeks while i was still at school. since may (after I got rid of most of the stress of school) I'm down to 1 every 3 weeks. I take lysine pills like candy and don't drink cola, eat peanuts, chocolate or peas...I have a percription for valtrex for incidental breakouts, but im getting tired of getting refills becasue im still getting the cold sores. Valtrex works to stop the outbreak before it becomes unsightly, but they still hurt and still put a damper on my social life. I was wondering if anyone was on suppressive therapy with valtrex. I have tried to research it but the main thing that comes up is genital herpes treatment. I asked 2 different doctors to put me on the treatment in may and they both turned me down telling me its not necessary...(over 20 breakouts in 6 months). I really want them to go away so i can have my life back. Please write back if you have any information for me. Thankyou! Posted on 06/20/08, 12:06 am |

I found this and it does talk about cold sores, and genital herpes as well. I found this at http://www.edrugstore.md/valtrex.htm
Valtrex (valacyclovir) is an oral daily therapy prescribed for genital herpes, cold sores or shingles. It doesn't cure herpes, but reduces the number of outbreaks and may lower the risk of passing on the virus. I also found oral herpes info at http://www.healthscout.com/ency/68...#TreatmentofOralHerpes Another this I read was that you should take Tylenol for fever and muscle aches. And drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration while you are having on out break. I hope this helped. RB

Valtrex does not even work for me most of the time the regular doses but i keep trying. I have as many or more outbreaks than you do. My doctor just prescribes me a year's worth at once, save hassle on refills.
I find that lack of sleep will trigger outbreaks a lot for me. I also try to eat foods high in lysine. If anyone finds a preventative therapy, pass it on!

Hi - I have found that avoiding the sun (or using a sunscreen lip balm) helps. Also, a doc once told me to avoid lip 'trauma' like extended kissing or anything that is a lot of action or pressure on the lips.
I also created the post about the lipbalm Herpecin - it works for me!

I have taken Valtrex for the last 2 years and suffer from almost constant outbreaks on my lips and gums. I feel like my life is over and I often feel like ending it but my kids keep me here. I want to believe it helps but I'm not sure. I do know that when I stop taking it I start breaking out immediately and they seem to be a little less severe on therapy but who knows. This virus is pure evil.
Please God let them find a real cure before I die.

lynnkate, my doctor last week told me to try suppressive therapy. He said if you get more than 9 breakouts a year it would be worth it. I said are you kidding me? I get more like 30-40 a year. It's one pill a day, he said try it for 30 days and come back if that doesn't work. The trouble is of course that these pills are expensive! yikes 1 a day will really add up. I haven't started yet but maybe this week.

Update, I have been taking valtrex daily for several months now. It has worked to supress all breakouts. The only time I got one was when I ran out of my prescription and was waiting to get it refilled (slow mail order plan!!).
Hoping this continues...

I hope you don't mind me posting in here. I am an associate producer for MTV's documentary series, True Life. We are currently working on a documentary featuring young people who are suffering from oral herpes. We realize that there is a large number of young people suffering and who may feel embarrassed by the visual aspect of the disease. If you or anyone else is interested in applying, please email us at embarrassed@mtvn.com for more information on the project.
