My child will be sitting watching a show or playing and just blurt out profanity? Like last night he was sitting in my room watching a show of his choice, I was reading and he just out of the blue says "f_k" sometimes if I question him on this he starts to bark or howl like a dog.
His pediatrician chuckled at this. Posted on 11/06/09, 06:11 pm |

kind of sounds like Tourette's syndrome to me...OR he might be doing it to get a rise out of you. Do you make a big deal out of the profanity and barking?

I agree with Emmeyc. Sounds like Tourette's syndrome. Find a doctor who will take this seriously.

Yes. My advice, read The Explosive Child, by Harvard Psychiatrist Dr. Ross Greene, published 10 years ago. Lost at School was just published this year and is excellent. Profanity is on the list of things these kids do. The book could help you decide if your child is an explosive child. And, if so, the book offers a better way of understanding their behavior and an effective way of addressing it.
Dr. Greene's understanding of this problem and approach to addressing it is a challenge to the status quo of reward/punishment (which for us only led to increased anxiety and all that that implies). However, positive empirical data is starting to compile. This year, his group merged with The Foundation for Children with Challenging Behavior to form Think:Kids (thinkkids.org) and the new group is part of the children's psych ward at Mass General -- affiliated with Harvard. In ten years, this could be the status quo -- but we parents don't have to wait. I would just encourage you to check it out now. I'm a cheerleader for this approach because it's the only thing that has worked for us. Good luck to you with however you decide to address this.
