I'm going to my doctor tomorrow for the first time about my OCD and I was just wondering if anyone knows what type of treatment options my doctor might prescribe. I'm kind of anxious about telling others about my disorder and I would kind of like a heads up on what to expect

Everyone's experiences are probably not the same, but I'll tell you about mine, and probably some elements of your visit will be similar. I first started showing signs of depression, so my doctor first of all did a bunch of blood tests on me to make sure that it wasn't my body that was causing such weird moods. After nothing showed up in the blood tests, he prescribed me Zoloft and then referred me to a psychologist. I talked with my psychologist, who determined that my intrusive thoughts may have been a result of OCD. After one medication didn't work, I had to go back and try another medication, and I had to tell my doctor more about my symptoms. I had a hard time doing this, so I kinda described the thoughts that I was over, because I thought that the thoughts I was going through at the time were alarming. Pretty much try to tell the doctor as much as possible, but if it makes you feel uncomfortable, try to say as much as your comfort level allows. After those medications didn't work, I was referred to a psychiatrist, who has prescribed me medications. I hope this helps at least a little bit, but try not to worry yourself too much. I know it's really hard to tell someone about it, but I think it will benefit you.

I have had OCD since childhood but when I first sought treatment in my mid 20's it was for contamination and violent obsessions. I first saw an inidividual therapist who is a licensed social worker and was so nervous she would commit me on my first visit! It was difficult and embarassing telling her about my thoughts and I was floored when she responded with so much support and understanding. She then referred me to a psychiatrist who put me on Luvox and I continued to see both of them for about 1 year. The therapy I underwent with my therapist was Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and this in combination with the medication made a world of difference. I wish you luck at your first visit.
