OCD and the media

So I was just on google and I typed in "stars with obsessive compulsive disorder" and I several links that had stars that had this disorder. I read about all of these stars, and it always seems like they just talk about their compulsions, and not about the thoughts that can come into the mind of a person with OCD. That really bugs me, because I feel as though because this is glossed over, people just assume that OCD is only about rituals. I have some OCD rituals, but truth be told they're not that bad. What bothers me the most are the thoughts, and I feel like the media doesn't really go into that at all. What do you guys think about this?

" I'm with you on that. The media covering, "classic OCD," or the "stereotypical" OCD. (counting, washing, touching, checking, arranging)

It is very difficult to open up about the thoughts. (like hurting someone or yourself, being a pedophile or what not.)

I used to think about punching people in the face when I would have a conversation with them or stabbing someone with a kitchen knife. Those things I think are harder to talk about, because you don't want to scare people. "

" yeh i agree with you it is really annoying, because the most crippiling part of ocd is by far the thoughts about yourself....like when i got help for my thoughts at first i just thought i was a lunatic because i did nt think it was anything remotly to do with ocd, even thought i had ALOT of ocd rituals when i was younger i thought the thoughts wer nothing to do with that, and its all linked, a girl at my work annoyed me the other day, its not her fault tho she does nt no much better sayin she defo had ocd cos she has to check the doors locked at night but so many folk think thats all it is i wish ocd was like that for everyone eh? :( "

" I know what you mean. The thoughts spinning around your head. Those are the ones that break you. They should talk about that stuff - the stars. Doesn't help anybody when just speaking about rituals. "

" Interesting topic! I've wondered before if any famous people have OCD.
I agree with you about the media only highlighting the "typical" traits of OCD, like handwashing and rituals, this is exactly why so many people- and in fact anyone who doesn't have someone close with OCD have such a stereotypical view of OCD. Noone seems to know about the images.
Thrash is right though, it can be hard to talk about the images, and I have often felt I haven't wanted to tell someone about thoughts cos they are too freightening.

But perhaps us OCDers- even the famous ones- should be less afraid of ourselves and speak up for the rest of us. "
