My 24-yr-old dtr came to me, crying this week, because she was at a point with her "boyfriend" where you would get more affectionate with hugging or kissing. She found she couldn't stand him hugging her. She never has liked it from us either. She is germophobic.

Her fear is that she may never be able to have a relationship with a guy and will remain alone forever. How do others handle this type of obsession in relationships?

" Is she being treated by a psychiatrist, with medication and therapy? Without treatment this type of symptom can ruin lives, destroy relationships and cause people to become recluses, and there is no reason to think it will just "go away" by itself. A woman this age needs to be able to relate to her lover in an appropriate manner, and only treatment will enable her to do that.

She deserves a happy normal life. There is nothing anyone here can do for her, until she takes it on herself to get treatment.

I hope she gets treatment soon. "

" I totally agree with you. In the course of this initial conversation with her, I said I hoped she would agree to counseling and she said she probably would. She is already on 30 mg of Lexapro, but may need more or something else.

I appreciate your response. This was devastating for me to hear from her. She is a lovely young woman. My heart just broke. "

" Your daughter will be ok. She needs to take appropriate steps in managing her OCD. That may be therapy and/or medication. Encourage her to never give up. I too thought that I would never be married because of OCD. I was proven wrong by a beautiful lady who accepts me completely for who I am. Also go to Amazon.com and there are plenty of self-help books on exposure therapy. God Bless you and your daughter. You are in our prayers :) "
