Itching/Picking at Skin

Does anyone compulsively pick at their skin? I don't do it that severely, but I do have a bad habit of picking at my face or back. I've been trying to stop it recently which is increasing the urge to do it. I've noticed that I do it more when I'm daydreaming, bored, sitting at the computer, or watching tv. This makes it hard to stop because it's only a semi-conscious thing.
I think this kind of goes along with lots of itching. Sometimes I'll just be in a really itchy mood and everything seems to itch. It's tough not to itch because it's not just an urge to itch a random spot, it actually feels itchy. But logically there's no reason for me to be so itchy. I notice this the most when I'm trying to fall asleep. Anyone have any tips to stop or reduce the picking and itching? Thanks. Posted on 07/02/09, 02:07 pm |

It could be eczema, but skin-picking is common in OCD and a lot of people do it when they are nervous. I personally have a bad habit of picking at my scalp when I am nervous, and I can assure you that my scalp does not itch. Just a pesky habit of mine. This is the time of year where dry skin can be at it's worst, so try a moisturizer and see if that changes things.

I don't itch. I just pick. Isn't it fun? I haven't always been a "picker", I'd just say in the past 6 months or so. Just another party favor from OCD!

I am the same way. I pick and scratch constantly. it rarely gets to the point where I break skin, but I've constantly got scratch marks on my neck and chest and arms, etc.
I completely understand what you're saying though, half the time I don't even realize i'm doing it until someone tells me to stop. I try to keep a bottle of lotion with me and once I notice that I'm scratching, I apply lotion. It keeps my hands busy for a few minutes, but for some reason, i don't like to scratch after I've put lotion on so it keeps me from doing it. Good luck!
