Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.
Funny I went to a Tech Expo yesterday and found myself replaying everything I said over and over worried that it was the right thing.
You can't imagine how many diseases I "contracted" when I was a kid. It did not help that my mother worked in a hospital and would talk about the latest disease some patient had... in full detail. I now joke with people about how many times "my kidneys failed" when I was young... LOL...
You are definitely not alone in this.
- brushing my teeth is one, too many details to share.
- I do this thing with numbers when I get particularly anxious. no exactly the counting though I do that to, again and again and again. What I do sounds like gibberish number association if you are close enough to hear. It all makes sense in my head though and is very comforting
- I have an "illogic fear" of ants. I see one or two like in the kitchen and I am compelled to remove the appliances and dishes and clean everything.
- again too much anxiety and I get agoraphobic and can't stand public surfaces or people. Basement classrooms at school really get to me on those days.
- I snap my fingers.
- check things doors and light switches, buttons.
- other's hair out of place, lint and hair on clothing or tags or the wrong folds in material, even if I don't know the person.
- dust it never seems to go away. mostly dead skin cells but still annoying.
- I hate the rough surface of scabs, but it's necessary for healing so I need to get over it. Carmex is a wonderful substance.
- the ability to have a child.
- I love 3, there are many other #s for many reasons.
- making random noises, especially blowing raspberries for no apparent reason.
- the general way in which I do many things
- twitches
- things like class-rolls the names and dates never seem to truly line up. so I'll run the pen from date to my square to name and my square because I don't believe /trust my eyes.
- mental review again, again and again.
That is what comes to mind right now.
I'm one of those OCD types that also suffer from a mood disorder (chronic depression and bipolar disorder).
Since the link didn't work, I'll just share which obessions/compulsions I share with you.
symmetry/exactness
concern with disease (didn't even know my hypochondria may be due to my ocd)
excessive concern with body part or aspect of appearance
needing to know something (i.e. seeing an article headline and feeling forced to read the article to see what it's about)
Fear of not saying just the right thing
Lucky/unlucky numbers (odd numbers freak me out...except for 7...I don't know why)
Ritualized tooth brushing
Re-reading or re-writing
Compulsive ordering or arranging
Special words repeated mentally to neutralize
Prayers (for vehicle rides and night time)
Mental review (i.e. conversations)
Urge to ask, tell, or confess (sounds like complaining for me, or fishing)
Urges to tap or rub
Rituals involving blinking or staring
Wow. Seems I share them all with you. I wish I could see the rest of the list.
The urge to ask, tell, or confess is really annoying, and it sounds like complaining for me too. It makes me feel like a narcissistic brat but I really can't help it, I try really hard to keep my insecurities to myself and not let my OCD make me voice them out loud.
hope this link works: http://www.brainphysics.com/checklist.php
Unfounded fears of contracting a dreadful illness (hypochondriac)
Excessive concerns about dirt and germs and environmental contaminants (wash my hands singing "Happy Birthday" three times)
Obsessions about one's body
An overwhelming need to align objects "just so"
Abnormal concerns about the neatness of one's personal appearance or one's environment (EVERYTHING is in order, and I'll freak if it's not)
The inability to discard anything because it "may be needed sometime," a fear of losing something or discarding something by mistake (such a packrat)
[I used to fear I was gay, but my bf makes me think otherwise now :-) ]
Repeating routine activities for no logical reason
Rewording or rewriting words or phrases
Unfounded fears that one has failed to do some routine task (i'll go back home after leaving to make sure the door's locked, lights off, etc, and it's always done, but I still do it)
Excessive concerns about morality and right or wrong (drives the bf crazy)
Repeated intruding images of violence (I imagine running people over all the time, and I picture death/accidents on loved ones)
Rituals involving food (everything must be an even number/amount)
Being overly concerned about one's weight
The belief that certain numbers are "lucky" or "unlucky" (odd numbers, except 7, freak me out)
Excessive, ritualized hand-washing, showering, bathing, or tooth-brushing
The need for symmetry and total order in one's environment (alphabetize things, color-code others, hang clothes in the exact same spot in the closet every day)
The need to keep doing something until one gets it "just right" (never get projects done)
Minutely inspecting household trash in case some "valuable" item has been thrown out
Repeatedly checking to see if a door is locked or an appliance is turned off
Checking and rechecking for mistakes
Checking associated with bodily obsessions
Pathological slowness in carrying out even the most routine activities
Blinking or staring rituals
Asking over and over for reassurance (also drives the bf crazy)
The overpowering need to tell someone something or to ask someone something or to confess something
The need to touch, tap or rub certain objects repeatedly
Counting compulsions
Mental rituals, such as reciting silent prayers in a effort to make a bad thought go away
Excessive list making
Counting/numbers. I can't stand the number 6 or 13. Unlucky. Love 7 and 8 though.
Grammar and spelling. I rewrite/read things I do until I am sure they are right.
Praying to get rid of anxious thoughts...especially while driving.
Confessing. This is one of the worst! I feel like I have to tell my husband or mom if I am having an obsessive thought.
I repeat words or phrases. They just get stuck in my mind and I have to say them.
My food must be eaten in an exact way, like a hamburger, even bites left to right, and cereal in "lines" Lol..too difficult to explain.

And girlnomad, OMG how bizarre, I am absolutely ruled by the same 2 numbers - 4 and 16, with 16 the "better" or more prevalent.
That being said, here's my list...
Repeating routine activities for no logical reason.
Rewording or rewriting words or phrases.
Obsessions about one's body.
An overwhelming need to align my thoughts (and sometimes objects) "just so".
The inability to discard anything because it "may be needed sometime," a fear of losing something or discarding something by mistake.
Accumulating useless objects. (Those last 2 are bad, you can hardly walk through our house, let alone find a chair to sit in or a tiny piece of table to use.)
Unfounded fears that one has failed to do some routine task.
Troublesome blasphemous or sacrilegious thoughts (which is weird, 'cause I'm not Christian/Jewish/or any other mainstream religion.)
The belief that certain numbers and/or words are "good" or "bad".
The need to keep doing something until one gets it "just right".
Pathological slowness in carrying out even the most routine activities. These last 2 are the reason my husband won't let me do the dishes or cook - he says it's too painful to watch how carefully and evenly I do everything.
Checking and rechecking for mistakes.
Blinking or staring rituals.
Behaviors based on superstitious beliefs (such as fixed rituals to "ward off" evil).
A feeling of dread if some arbitrary act is not performed (ALL DAY LONG... exhausting).
The need to touch, tap or rub certain objects repeatedly.
Counting compulsions: counting panes in windows or billboards along a highway, for example.
Mental rituals, such as reciting names and numbers in a effort to make a bad thought go away. (That's a biggie.)
Feeling energy from people (like an aura) and fear that it will somehow contaminate/change me.
Constant mental rituals to ward off becoming like others (complete strangers, usually - even though I'm fully aware that they may be wonderful people).
Mentally drawing lines/borders around areas of "bad" energy to keep them from affecting me. (These last 3 just sing 'crazy woman' to me...)
Sorry such a big list... but that's what I live with.
1.)intrusive thoughts
2.)re reading emails to make sure I did not write something mean.
3.) finishing lists I make.
4.) doing everything in order
