Diabetics AND Measuring Food....

Not too many people came out in the bipolar group so I thought that maybe I would get more replies in this group. I am obese. There's no way getting around it now. I weigh in at 198 and for my stated age of soon to be 29 and current height of 5 ft 5 1/2. I should weigh in at approximately 136. I tried to start measuring my food last night because I have finally come to the realization that when I eat at home measuring my food and counting calories is now going to be a must. So the next time I make spaghetti I will try to cook less of it so I in turn eat less. I tried measuring a cup of each of the things I cooked last night and in turn found out that even at a cup it was waaaaaaaaaaay toooooooo much food for one person to consume. I had white shells pasta in white cheddar and corn. My question is how much food is actually the right amount to measure? Should I go down to half a cup of each? I don't want to become diabetic but In turn want to know how you diabetics go about counting calories and portion control. Don't mean to single you out. I just want to eat better and smarter.

Thanks in advance,

Princess

" Thanks I will take a look at that when I get back from turning in my paper. Not going to class today had a horrible night sleep because last night I wasn't well enough to exercise.

I don't understand what a zone block is but maybe if you told me what it was I would understand. "

" Rather than count calories we count blocks. They are like little portions of food or servings. For most women it will be 11, and for most men it will be 14 a day.

So every meal I will eat 3 protein servings(blocks), 3 carb servings and 3 fat servings. That would be three blocks at all three meals.

Then I have 2-one block snacks. Thats one protein, carb and fat.

We always eat the three (protein carb and fat ) together in equal amounts.

It is very easy. "

" I should also say I do not measure my non starchy veggies and fruits if I am doing the easy method. It is only the starchy veggies or pasta that I do the block method. see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iY... "

" I'm not sure I could follow this diet. My daughter loves pasta and if I cut pasta out of her diet she's going to be upset with me. And I can't cook extra food for her because then it would be a waste. This diet cuts out pasta and I am not sure I can handle that. "

" They sell pasta on there site. I think it cost to much. The list shows one block. If you can have three in a meal you can have 3/4 cup of pasta. "

" Okay pasta is allowable.....that makes things easier. I cook pasta with veggies always have. So eating extra veggies won't be a bad idea. So I probably should have eaten more corn than I put on my plate because according to this diet you're supposed to pack your plate full with veggies. I guess I will start buying the mixed veggies at the store so I can give kidlet a more variety......and does bbq chicken wings count as protien or no? I eat those at least once a week but I only eat about 4 of them accompanied with loads of veggies anyway.....I am thinking about joining the site. I clicked on that link and watched one Dr Sears video after another and in his diet on the portions thing he talked about didn't include pasta that's what got me worried. Tonight's dinner is Spaghetti and I don't know what a zone serving of Spaghetti with meat sauce would be. I know from what I saw on your list each zone is ounces or cup sizes and I am not sure how much spaghetti would be allot able. I can freeze a lot of the unused spaghetti so I can re heat the extra at a later date.....We have an extra mouth to feed today so I can't really cut back on how much I cook today. "

" I always say I didn't get fat from eating veggies. Do you like veggies? Corn is kinda starchy more like a grain so I wouldn't go over board with it until you get a grip on your blood sugar. But non starchy veggies (the more color the better) are good and very low calorie and won't spike your blood sugar. Have you ever looked at the glycemic index? It it is a measure of how food effects your blood sugar. The zone diet does it too by limiting (moderation) your high glycemic foods. But in most cases fruits and veggies are 2/3 your plate and over flowing. So most of your meals will be fruits and veggies with lean protein and a little olive oil. "
