I know of someone who died from it also, a friend of a friend. However, there were other factors that apparently they were unaware of prior to the surgery - she was in coma for a brief time and then died.
I have many friends who have had the surgery and some had complications but did well all the same.

Pros and Cons with all surgery.
I had surgery a little over two weeks ago and feel on top of the world. Im having to get used to new sensations but considering how long I was obese and with diabetes and all the related conditions I had to do this. So for me time wiill tell, I have lost 30lbs in 17 days, my sugars are reduced and I am off all other meds at pressent. I will review in 2 weeks and go from their. The Gastric Bypass support group is absolutley awesome and so full of usefull information. Anyone considering surgery should pay a visit. Otherwise, complications do happen, I am prepaired for them as I venture into my new life, a slimmer healthier life and the life I so deserve. Good luck to you all BUZZ (Andy)

I had the surgery 16 days ago and so far have lost 20 pounds. The pain was no near what I expected actually a lot easier. I would do it all over again, but remember its not a quick fix only a tool.

I had gastric bypass in June 2006. It truly was the best gift I every gave myself. I had severe GERD, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and was on 8 medications. After surgery all my conditions were resolved. I've had no complications (knock on something LOL) and have gone from a tight size 28 to a size 4. I've since had plastic surgeries to remove the skin that is the result of large weight loss (whether you have surgical assistance or lose it the typical way) and am very happy with my decision. I would do it again tomorrow if I had too. I am maintaining my weight loss now after reaching my goal and am thankful for the head start surgery gave me... it is ONLY a head start. I'll be fighting obesity for the rest of my life.
At 295 on a 5'2" frame exercise actually hurt. Surgery allowed me the jump I needed through the rapid weight loss I was able to exercise more and change my lifestyle... I'm active now and that helps me maintain. The diminished capacity of my stomach too. I eat lots of great stuff though obviously much smaller amounts (at 3 years out about 1 cup at a sitting) and surprisingly its great yummy stuff... I rarely miss anything. You are welcome to check out the stuff I eat... I love to cook so I blog about it: www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.com and my before & after pics are there. I've puked 3 times (first few months) and "dumped" (a rapid heartrate, sweating, nausea thing when you have too much sugar/fat/or carbs) 3 times. It's not pleasant but lasted about 1 hour (what foods cause this differs from person to person). You know surgery isn't for everyone and like any surgical procedure there are risks... 1 in 200 die (current published stats) and there are some complications that can arise. I didn't have any but I do know some who have had some. Research from reliable sources is key. Hit your Dr up. Best wishes in your research, ~Michelle
