Every now and then I get frustrated and angry at my weight and the struggle to lose it. I also get angry at society and the way it treats people.
When I read JaysShadow's post I could relate to a lot of what she was saying. I myself have been thin most of my life and didn't start gaining weight until I was in my middles 30's. Some of it was due to medical issues I had and some was because I become a lot less active. I like most people do not blame anyone for my weight gain but I do get frustrated at how society acts towards obesity. Obama, Mr. Slim Jim himself has even made me angry with his tax hikes on soda, pop, chips and what he and his staff consider to be junk food. Now mind you I wouldn't have a problem with these tax hikes if the prices would go down in healthy and organic foods but I see no sign of that. Also in my opinion what's the point of having any tax hikes if you do not have proper people that know how to budget the money properly. After all more then half his staff owes back taxes or is noted for cheating on their spouse as well as many other issues. Now they are saying that people who are obese and in need of an ambulance will have to pay more for the use of the medical ambulance. Paying for an extra seat on airplanes to me has also been utter nonsense in my opinion as well if you are overweight. Trying to find jobs is also another issue. People who are obese can be so very creative and even over qualified yet they are not hired because of their weight. Although this is never said openly I think a lot of people can relate to what I am saying. We have loads of programs for addictions to drugs, alcohol, child molesters etc.. that our tax money goes to in order to run these programs but not a whole lot for people who struggle to lose weight, addiction to overeating as well as free programs for activities that obese people can participate in. Even clothes shopping is extremely frustrated because trying to find affordable clothes that not only fit but look half way decent is a struggle. I just for the life of me can't understand why materials to make larger clothes has to cost so much more and if I could sew half way decent I would make my own. Also some of the shops are so very wrong about what they think true size is of course most of those clothes come from other countries so that probably explains their stupidity. Now mind you I am not saying that society should encourage obesity but I am saying I feel there should be more support and available programs to help people over come the problem. Taking away things and taxing the heck out us as well as charging more for obese people to use certain things certainly won't stop obesity. And not having things to accommodate those who are obese isn't going to make the problem go away either. If it would we wouldn't have so many obese people today. I would also like to see more doctors take the time with overweight people and work with them rather then simply say you need lap band or gastric bypass as most of us can't afford those procedures and I also believe that a lot of folks out there need to have more support on dealing with overeating before one should take on those type of surgery risks. Anyway I rambled quite a bit here lol but sometimes I just get so angry at how things are handled in our society it just feels good to vent every now and then. Hope you all are having a good day and feel free to vent a bit as well. Cheers Kate:) Posted on 06/30/09, 04:06 pm |

There have been tax hikes on cigarettes for years. Does it stop the addiction? No. Truthfully I don't mind the tax hike on that stuff but I'd appreciate a decrease on the cost of fruits and vegetables. I buy them anyway but I have to limit how much I can buy on my budget.
I don't have a problem with Lane Bryant. I have a problem with that and Walmart are the only stores I can get decent clothes in. Not like walmart has a great selection but sometimes I come across good stuff in my size. I too wait until my current clothes are warn out before I attempt clothes shopping. It can be so aggrevating going into a dressing room. I get stuck in some clothes, or they are too big. Never are they the right size for me. And yes it is rediculous that the insurance won't pay for your surgery until you are completely incapacitated. I have the same problem with getting medical insurance. The only reason I have it is because I'm disabled. If I wasn't, I'd be SOL. Some setup we have going on in America. Thinness is praised, fatness is jeered at, and yet the average size of a woman is 14/16. What a load of crap that we are fed.

I don't mean to veer too far off topic, but hope you'll bear with me for a moment. I said earlier I hadn't heard about a junkfood tax. It really made me curious, so I went to whitehouse.gov. I couldn't find any reference to this tax, so I just googled 'junk food tax', and that did the trick. Nowhere did it indicate such a tax has already been implemented by the current administration. Did read the history on the topic...first, this idea has been around since the late 70's. It seems to gain some interest, be discussed, then falls away regularly. In Dec./2003, the WHO recommended that there be such a tax, but again, no indication that it went anywhere at that time. Lots of interesting talk about what the revenue could be used for, like actually making healthier choices more affordable/available...which is exactly what's been discussed here, that our society/government should in fact be helping solve the problem. Anyway, I just wanted to share this for what it's worth...what the current administration does or does not do with it is something, but it isn't some new idea Obama is coming up with, and it is recommended by the WHO. Advocates of the tax looked at CA's tax hikes on alcohol and cigs...the increased prices have shown a significant decrease in purchases; cigs in particular dropped something like 27% if I remember correctly.
Anyhow, like I said, that's not really on topic in this thread...venting is. On that note, I wanted to share one more thing. Watching some show last night (I think it was Bones), it came up that the characters had to state their weight and height. This absolutely beautiful woman was asked to give her data. The character tensed up, hesitated, then said, "5'8"...1?? pounds"...mumbling the exact number as though embarrassed by her weight. She was asked to repeat, and she blurted out, "135 pounds, okaY!" like she was ashamed of this number. This outraged me, brought home yet again the insidious role media has played in our perception of beauty, our inability to ever live up to these insane standards, our varying feelings of inadequacy because we don't fit the image...AAARRRGGGHHH! Phew, okay, I feel a bit better, ty for listening:)
