Every now and then I get frustrated and angry at my weight and the struggle to lose it. I also get angry at society and the way it treats people.
When I read JaysShadow's post I could relate to a lot of what she was saying. I myself have been thin most of my life and didn't start gaining weight until I was in my middles 30's. Some of it was due to medical issues I had and some was because I become a lot less active. I like most people do not blame anyone for my weight gain but I do get frustrated at how society acts towards obesity. Obama, Mr. Slim Jim himself has even made me angry with his tax hikes on soda, pop, chips and what he and his staff consider to be junk food. Now mind you I wouldn't have a problem with these tax hikes if the prices would go down in healthy and organic foods but I see no sign of that. Also in my opinion what's the point of having any tax hikes if you do not have proper people that know how to budget the money properly. After all more then half his staff owes back taxes or is noted for cheating on their spouse as well as many other issues. Now they are saying that people who are obese and in need of an ambulance will have to pay more for the use of the medical ambulance. Paying for an extra seat on airplanes to me has also been utter nonsense in my opinion as well if you are overweight. Trying to find jobs is also another issue. People who are obese can be so very creative and even over qualified yet they are not hired because of their weight. Although this is never said openly I think a lot of people can relate to what I am saying. We have loads of programs for addictions to drugs, alcohol, child molesters etc.. that our tax money goes to in order to run these programs but not a whole lot for people who struggle to lose weight, addiction to overeating as well as free programs for activities that obese people can participate in. Even clothes shopping is extremely frustrated because trying to find affordable clothes that not only fit but look half way decent is a struggle. I just for the life of me can't understand why materials to make larger clothes has to cost so much more and if I could sew half way decent I would make my own. Also some of the shops are so very wrong about what they think true size is of course most of those clothes come from other countries so that probably explains their stupidity. Now mind you I am not saying that society should encourage obesity but I am saying I feel there should be more support and available programs to help people over come the problem. Taking away things and taxing the heck out us as well as charging more for obese people to use certain things certainly won't stop obesity. And not having things to accommodate those who are obese isn't going to make the problem go away either. If it would we wouldn't have so many obese people today. I would also like to see more doctors take the time with overweight people and work with them rather then simply say you need lap band or gastric bypass as most of us can't afford those procedures and I also believe that a lot of folks out there need to have more support on dealing with overeating before one should take on those type of surgery risks. Anyway I rambled quite a bit here lol but sometimes I just get so angry at how things are handled in our society it just feels good to vent every now and then. Hope you all are having a good day and feel free to vent a bit as well. Cheers Kate:) Posted on 06/30/09, 04:06 pm |

Can relate to quite a bit of what you said here...clothes shopping annoys me because I'm tied down to just a couple styles that the specialty shops offer and just don't like any of it. Also personally I've had problems with very poor quality at Lane Bryant's...the stuff rips in the weirdest places! So I go to Catherine's, spend a small fortune, and wind up with very nice looking clothes I wouldn't be caught dead in if I could just find what I like in my size! GRRRR! I end up wearing just a few clothes until they're falling apart, rather than maintaining a decent wardrobe because I hate the whole process.
I have one brother and two sisters who chose gastric bypass surgery; I completely supported them in their choice, cheered them on with their weightloss. However anybody reaches their goal, they should be proud of their achievement. It's just that for a lot of personal reasons, surgery is not my choice. My sibs have all tried to talk me into it. I try to respectfully state my views, but they won't listen. My brother said to me, "I know you--there's no way you're going to lose the weight without the surgery". I guess I'm fed up with this as well. For me, I'll either lose the weight or I won't...but I just don't choose surgery. I'm just weird about it. You did get me thinking though...those groups you mentioned who do have all kinds of programs, how did they go about getting the support? I'm wondering, what if any of us in our states began investigating this, advocating for real programs that address this. After all, isn't all the media these days talking about the obesity 'epidemic' in our country? Maybe it's high time this gets addressed in a meaningful, actually helpful, way. Phew, lol you are right, venting feels good sometimes:)

Niffer, I so agree with you! I went on a cruise last Fall so went to Catherine's and ended up spending almost as much on clothes as I did on the cruise!!!!! Just like you...I have a few OK clothes I wear to death.
Although it has gotten better in the last few years, designers still don't seem to "get" us as far as designing flattering styles in fabrics that skim the body instead of clinging, like so many seem to do. They also seem to take the measurements that would fit a slim body and just make everything bigger, longer, etc. in the same proportions. We don't have the same proportions as skinny people!!!! As far as surgery....I don't have insurance. Hopefully our President will be able to do something about that sometime soon! When I called a local clinic, I was told the cost would be a minimum of $50,000...and well....the last time I looked in my checking account, I was a little short of that LOL...

I'm scared about the possibility of losing my job because I'm afraid I won't get hired on account of my weight. I've worked my entire life and i am a good worker, but just because I am fat, OBESE, it's going to be more difficult for me to get another job? I don't know if that's true, but it sure scares me. I've been fat/obese/whatever my entire life and I don't know anything else.

I'm with you all. I get furious with the airline charging double. I hate buying clothes because I usually have to do it from a catalogue and the ones I like don't fit me. Then the job thing- I was passed over for a social services job that I was highly qualified for, for a woman whose work experience was working at Cosco. I was furious. I know I was passed over for many other jobs, but in this case I found out who they hired and..Ahhhhggggg!
The junk food tax I wouldn't mind as much if it were going to help obese people get bettter or to prevent obesity or something like that, but how it is, it's just going to make some rich people richer. I'm 47 and have wanted gastric bypass for years, but I never had insurance that would cover it. Finally, after being disabled they will pay for it. Wouldn't it have made more sense to pay for it while I was still working and productive instead of waiting until more damage was done?

I agree fully with on getting more support before doing any surgery it can turn out bad, if you don't got the right support around you.

I *so* agree with you. I have a dream of all public schools teaching the nutritional awareness that I lacked as a child and making it mandatory both in school cafeterias and children's education.
If every child and parent had an evaluation of their child's individual health needs around nutrition annually as a part of getting registered for school in the fall and let's say a computerized card that allowed them the exchanges they needed to thrive so that healthy dining was automatic 5-10 times per week (some of the school children here get breakfast as well as lunch at school and are both starving and overweight because of the lousy food), then we could whip the obesity in kids epidemic in 2-5 years of application. If adults that needed care for obesity could learn what I did from reading prominent endocrinologist Diana Schwarzbein, M.D's ground breaking works The Schwarzbein Principle and have the opportunity to learn Z Health and to swing Kettlebells with an RKC certified trainer, we'd soon have a nation of supremely healthy, outrageously strong and unbelievably gifted, athletic folk to do what they are here to do on the planet rather than being mired down in obesity related depression, disease, fatigue, diabetes, etc. I've watched several diabetics go into remission using these tools. I am insulin resistant with fatigued adrenal glands and could easily have become diabetic and more obese (at my highest I was 352 pounds at 5'8") like most of my relatives. My obesity comes directly from PTSD and childhood abuse. I had an excellent diet growing up. The more I used poor food to comfort and medicate the mind-shattering pain I was in, the more obese and depressed I became. What I've learned in the last few years could have saved me 30 years of agony. I guess for me the point is that I know *now* and can share these blessings with others so that they don't have to suffer any longer either. for more info on the Schwarzbein Principle http://www.schwarzbeinprinciple.co... Z Health, developed by Dr Eric Cobb, for getting out of pain and how bad you feel when you move, re-educating your nervous system, restoring mobility and stability, for repairing injury and preventing future injuries, for freeing your trapped inner athlete see http://www.zhealth.net/ for more info on RKC instructors and how working out in a fun way only 10-15 minutes twice a week could transform your life (forget the gym, this portable Godsend gives both a cardiovascular and aerobic workout and strength training with Yoga-like movements, and it gives me so much energy I can't wait to work out) http://www.king5.com/video/healthl... and http://www.dragondoor.com/ I'd be interested to organize 100 persons that need to lose over 100 pounds each to try just these 3 resources and write a book about the results, not just the lost weight or inches but the abundance gained by restoring people to their ultimate health and what they would go on to do with those health gains. I dream about what 100 transformed people could do, let loose on a planet that is crying out for our help. I believe we could turn our nation around and put a dent in poverty and world hunger issues. What do you think we could do???

I agree with you. It's rediculous with all these tax hikes and I am in a state with probrably the highest taxes on all that and more. I am disgusted with it all. What stimulous package? I haven't seen the likes of it. I knew that would be a joke. We are in worst situation with this budget than before. I always struggled some with my weight as a child but seem to keep things in check in teens and early adulthood. It wasn't until after I had my 2 kids I gained the weight. Then my mom ups and dies out of knowhere, at the age of 65 and I gain more weight. I am now a number I thought I'd never reach on the scale. I am disgusted shopping for clothes. it's depressing and I have to get fitted for a a wedding I am in and the fitting is in 2 weeks. I am scared nothing will look good on me, cause I'm fat. God, I wish I was back at 150 or 165lbs. That's I could accept but this no!

Hi there!
not quite sure how Obama's stimulus package, tax hikes on junk food etc, has anything to do with how you feel about yourself and your weight. It's time we all stop blaming others or other circumstances for our personal problems.

LB2367,
I don't think anyone is blaming anyone personally for their weight gain this was just a post to vent a bit, Which I think is ok to do every now and then. It is merely based on frustrations and anger of how overweight people are treated by society today. Sometimes it gets hard finding work, fitting in certain public places because there is no proper seating or even in the medical industry there is lack of proper medical accommodations. We all do have our own personal; problems to deal with but every now and then I really do believe venting our frustrations sometimes can help relieve a bit of the pressure. This does not mean it is going to solve our issues but surely everyone has a right to vent if they wish too. Anyway I am sure you have days where it rains on your parade so to speak and sometimes it is nice just vent out a bit and have people listen and honestly I couldn't ask for a better group then these fine people here to relate with. Alas I hope you are getting through all your struggles and journeys in life and wish you much success but again remember every now and then it is ok to vent:):):) Cheers Kate

That's right Kate, venting is A-OK! I wish ppl would read through more threads before jumping to conclusions...there's all kinds of evidence that we're very much accepting responsibility for our own health, just read a few discussions, maybe check with a few journals.
I hadn't been following Obama's actions, hadn't heard about the junkfood tax. Just winging it here, so bear with me, but who eats junk food? My concern is, junk food is CHEAP...POOR people buy it just to have something to eat. I'm wondering about a tax like this. I've occasionally shopped at Aldi's...it's filled with very cheap junk food. Their produce, what little there is, has been looking a tad bit better these days, but there's no variety. There are no organic choices. I like soy products, can't remember seeing any there. And meat...where's the lean or extra lean stuff? Both my daughters & their husbands are low income college students...what do you think they're eating? They are not overweight, but that doesn't mean they're able to be all that healthy either with the food they can afford. Our country DOES need to address this issue. I liked a lot of the suggestions about schools for the kids.
