I'm 33/f, and have always struggled with my weight. I'm homebound and far too big and currently fighting hard to lose weight. I want to be healthier and live a fuller and long life. My life is so small right now and I have so few people in my life. I feel ashamed of my weight, and angry at the world and myself for making me feel this way. Such a stigma is attached to obesity that it's an enormous pressure in and of itself.
It angers me when people have more sympathy for a drunk who gets behind the wheel of a car and endangers lives, then they do someone who is struggling with this sort of an eating disorder. I have family members who are more supportive of alcoholics who can leave alcohol alone and never touch it again. It would be a much different ballgame if a drinker, smoker, drug addict, were told they must refrain and break their addiction, but they also have to have just a little of the things they are addicted to each day. Three times a day, or five times, in small amounts, etc, to survive. Its not like we can't not ever eat again. It is a lot to ask of someone and I don't understand why people don't get that. I'm not blaming society for my weight problems. I'm blaming them for how they treat obese people. Anyway, thank you for letting me vent here. I hope to make some friends. I could really use some friends to support and who may support me as we struggle along on our journeys with all of this. Jay Posted on 06/29/09, 08:06 pm |

Hi I just joined to be able to reply to your post, also I am very new and need to loose weight.
Hi Jay,Im just gonna share how I see it, I believe since alcoholics has been a know disease(addiction) for many many years that ppl will be more supportive rather than an overweight person. I think ppl think that when they see an overweight person they think how and why they dont look at it as a eatting disorder, they think ppl just eat to eat and because they want to. Little do they know it is an addiction hell we eat for any and every reason, just like when I was on drugs real bad yrs ago, I couldn't just use on fridays, I had to use 24/7 it goes the same with food. Now adays the public is getting more and more educated from the discovery channel and so on, lots of discussions on talk shows, Oprah, Dr. Oz, fit t.v. etc. There will always be 1 in the crowd that doesnt understand and will talk down to a heavy set person. They have no idea. Try not to be angry with family members and ppl in general if they havent experienced addiction then they will be judgemental. I see this is a supportive group and I too hope to make friends including you. PM me any time, Im here for you. Oh WELCOME!!!!!!!

Hi Jay - welcome to the group. Your post has made me think about a lot of things, and I'd like to share them here. Alcohol and substance abuse and addiction is looked at with more sympathy than obesity. Obesity for me is addiction to food. Obesity is also considered a disease - an epidemic. Being fat has always been frowned upon, and OK to make fun of. It's not appropriate to pick on an addict. I'm a food addict, and the only real treatment for me is to eat better and exercise. But I've been a food addict my entire life - I need more help and gastric bypass surgery isn't the help I need. The way I feel about being obese is directly related to how I've been treated my entire life (teased and rejected for my weight), and how the media has portrayed what it's like to be obese. I get very frustrated with the way obese people are looked at, and how anorexic models and famous people are idolized and worshipped. It's warped. Anyway, I'll stop now. Thanks for posting, and I hope you like it here - Sue

Hi jay, would like to add my welcome as well. You're quite right about food addiction- definitely not looked upon as kindly or compassionately as any other addiction. And we do have to keep feeding our addiction, so lets make sure we feed it well, with beautiful, wholesome, life giving nutrients, so that we may have our greatest desire, a healthy , fuller life. I am trying to stop thinking about what i want to eat, and start thinking of my body like a machine, if i continue to put the wrong petrol in it, it will cease to operate efficiently and effectively and will eventually break down. So from now on before i eat what i know i shouldn't ,i am going to take a moment to think about whether the food i am about to eat is going to give me health or is going to be detrimental to it. Blessings to you today, Welcome also to lorig41, and hello susanparks. have a great day guys.

Hello and welcome! I wasn't overweight until adulthood, but always had problems with food, sneak eating, emotional eating, distorted body image. It absolutely is an illness. Right here and now is a great place and time to talk through this journey and recovery, the support is amazing:)

I'm glad you're here jay. I understand your frustration. overweight people are often treated very cruelly. I have even been spit on. Overweight people seem to be the only ones that its still ok to discriminate against. I get especially angry at the airlines. They make a fat person buy 2 tickets assuming that someone MIGHT complain. If that's there logic then when my pencil thin son goes with me he should only pay half price. If someone complains about sitting next to an alcoholic that reeks of booze, they don't make the alcoholic pay for an extra seat so no one has to sit next to them. O.K. sorry for the rant. I'm off my soapbox.

Thank you all for the amazing welcome! I was actually surprised because any time I've ever posted at pretty much any forum, I somehow ended up walking away feeling upset, but not here! Upset for some of the experiences you all have had to go through, and for the stigma attached to obesity, but pleased to have found people who truly understand what I'm going through! I look forward to getting to know you all better. =]

Hi! Welcome to the group. It is awful the way that obese ppl are treated. It is SAD that someone tries to make themself feel better by using someone elses disorders or diabilities against them. I have always been overweight since about the age of 7, always the one that was made fun of, but smoothed it over by being everyones friend.
I know how you feel, it is not fair, and it is not right. It is an addiction, and it is something we have to deal with little at a time. Best of luck to you! I have found this group very supportive, and I hope you do too!

Welcome to DS and this group. You will find lots of support in the groups and in the friends you will meet here. Food is an addition but the problem we have to eat to stay alive. I don't think the alcoholics and those who support their trying to quit understand they can live without the booze but we can't live without the food. That makes it harder for us because we have to cut down and face the food problem every day. That is a verrry hard thing to do at times. I just started by cutting out something I knew I shouldn't eat one at a time. I still fall back into old habits but then start all over again.
