Advice:
How do I WANT to want to lose weight?

I have reasons to lose the weight. For some reason I'm scared to lose it- I've done therapy, etc but I just can't get myself motivated to do it and sabotage myself at every turn. Does anyone else have this problem? How can I make myself WANT to lose it?

" That's a tough one.It kind of depends where you are emotionally I guess. For me some of the big things were figuring out what I'm afraid of, what are my payoffs, and looking back at all the things overeating has stolen from me. ( put a post on this site) I give the overeating a face (I'm very visual) and when I get that nagging feeling I talk to it like a person. I wil say "no, you're not getting your way this time! Stop stealing from me". I guess that sounds a little crazy, but so far it's working for me. I still struggle everyday, and sometimes I still want to give up, but I just make myself do it. When i don't think I can exercise I make myself start. I don't punish myself if I can't do as much as I want, I just have to do something. I have no idea if this will work for you, it's just whats been helping me this time around. Good luck and hang in there. "

" Wow missina that's exactly the type of advice I was looking for! As I read your reply about "I give the overeating a face" my ex's face popped up in my mind. I think giving my overeating his face and overcoming that may help me in multiple areas as I have defintely felt that he has stolen much of my happiness and it's time for me to take it back. I love that. I'm going to use that approach. Thanks so much! "

" I'm reading a book called "The Gabriel Method".
The author lost a lot of weight...and he has some interesting things to say.

One thing he talks about is how we have emotional reasons to hold on to the weight. He talks about how it is very difficult to rationally talk ourselves out of these emotional forces.

He recommends doing some very simple meditative exercises to put ourselves in a special frame of mind...a frame of mind in which we can possibly change some of the underlying factors that make and keep us fat.

One issue he gets into is "being safe". A lot of us seem to feel safer fat. For whatever the reason, it "shields" us from perceived threats. One of the meditations focuses a lot on feeling safe.

I haven't gotten very far in the book yet, but I have tried the first exercise, and it really relaxes me! I do it before sleep, and I can't get all the way through usually before I AM asleep. I suffer from insomnia due to anxiety at times, so I am very impressed with how that is working! I guess I'm supposed to do it sitting up, so I'll try that..

Missina and others have some great discussions that explore why we don't and do want to lose weight. You might check those out and see if some of them strike home with you....

Wishing you strength, hope, and courage to battle this problem! "

" Thank you that is exactly my issue- I feel safer fat. I have literally doubled my weight over the past ten years and don't recognize myself. I will check out that book. Thanks so much. "

" I've read Dr. Phil's books and he discusses this issue at length. I really like his advice and try to use it. It's tough but you can do it. You might want to pick up The Ultimate Weight Solution or Self Matter from your library and see if they look like something you could use. Plus check out his website. As a former FCC chairman said, television is "a vast wasteland" but I think having something positive on like Dr. Phil makes it better. "
