Advice:
I just can't seem to lose it

No matter how hard I have tried, and I have tried, I can't seem to lose weight. I'm 23 years old and weigh 320 lbs. I work out, I get minimum results, and I gain it back in a day with one lapse in judgement. I have weight working against me genetically, my father is obese and so are my grandparents ect.

When I was 16, I weighed a little over 200 lbs, and in one year I gained 100 lbs.

I've seen a doctor for weightloss since I was 9. My parents saw me as overweight, which at that point I was just a little chubby, not severly overweight. I could have stood to lose maybe 20 lbs at the most. My mom was afraid I would become obese (she is not), so they put me on fen fen. I found out years later, that by putting a child of my age on weightloss drugs, because my body was not fully developed, could have serious backlash in the future. My parents were aware after I confronted them, of the risk, but told me they thought it was worth it and blamed me for my weight gain. I don't eat any worse and actually better than 90% of the people I know, but I am a lot heavier. I have been on adipex and an assortment of other weightloss pills, but to no avail.

Some of my friends have suggested getting my thyroid tested because of my drastic weight gain, but money comes into play. I am without insurance and I just don't know what to do anymore. My friends are supportive and love me and so does my family, and I love myself.... but if i can't lose the weight, I am going to be diabetic, for that also runs in my family.

When I was on the adipex and other pills, I was also on a 2000 calorie a day diet.... after 3 months I lost 15 lbs...... wtf!? On less than 2000 calories a day, and working out, that was it....

I don't know what else to do, if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.... I am at a dead end.... and I keep giving up shortly after I get the determination to go forward.

" My heart goes out to you; every time I hear of someone who could really benefit from medical advice, but is stopped short due to financial burdens and insurance problems...I get really outraged, frustrated. Our healthcare system is in serious need of restructuring, people need some help here, aarrgh!

Okay, that's a rant, not helpful...sorry. But are you in or near a community with a free clinic, or one that's subsidized where you could get a blood test fairly cheap? Rule out the medical first, because all the dieting in the world won't work well if there's a thyroid issue or Cushing's that isn't being dealt with.

Sounds like your parents, while well intended and wanting good health for you, could've done harm, with like you said potential long term consequences with the med, and mixed up messages about food, health, self-esteem. But you have a great attitude shining through, good support system of ppl who love you, and loving yourself. That goes a long way.

Sorry not more helpful with practical suggestions, but definitely you have my support. Oh, about a thyroid issue, those meds if it is an issue can be bought generic, under $4/mo. in many cases, so hopefully that wouldn't be a barrier after the initial office visit, tests.

Take care and don't despair (I really didn't mean to rhyme there, lol). "

" Yes, I would check to see if there is a free clinic in your area, and I would ask the Dr. aat the weight clinic, why your results are not what you think they should be.
I am so sorry that your parents focused on the physical outside look, instead of your health, and teaching you that looks are not all that matters, but as a mother myself I am sure they thought they were doing the right thing at the time.
For me I had never really been physically active until the last year or so, I might walk a mile, but that is not enough for trying to lose weight.
I wish I could help you too with something other than just general info, but I'm not sure what to tell you. GOOGLE IT!!! See what you come up with.
Good luck, and let us know how it all goes! :)

" I have a similar problem! I was not really overweight until my sophomore year of college when i started taking Birth Control pills, my kidneys hurt and i gained 40lbs in a month! +60 throughout the year and have steadily gained til 325lbs. I went doctors and specialists who all have found "nothing wrong with me" they did not do thyroid testing until i asked. My thyroid is in the normal range and according to my doctor if it was my thyroid theres nothing that can be done about losing the weight gained. I eat healthier then my skinny friends and exercise and yet see minimal results.

The reason I tell you this is you should find out medically but be prepared b/c it probably wont be. usually with thyroid theres accompanying pains somewhere (usually back). I wasted hundreds of dollars I didnt have going to doctors and specialist trying to determine why i was gaining weight and why i had pain. Everyone said the same thing it has nothing to do with my area/department. I've even tried a nutrionist but found that wasn't very helpful for me.

have you tried a nutrionist? Sometimes they can be a little more helpful then medical doctors; usually they'll do free phone consultations or in a very sly way you could perhaps have a parent(maybe your dad?) with insurance make an appt for themselves and you tag along and your parent can conveniently bring up your story. Usually people feel compelled to give some sort of advice. "
