Help for My New Beginning...

I've been here a thousand times before, but then I disappear for months and forget everything. I'm sick of being overweight! I'm tall but I'm 350lbs and it's wreaking havoc on my emotional and physical state.

For the esthetic reasons - looking good in a bathing suit and naked. For myself - to feel good about who I am. For my daughter - to be able to run around after her. And for all those in between reasons - more energy, better sleep, live longer, more alert, WHATEVER.... I need to lose about 150lbs. Any more than that might not be healthy at my height.

So, I'm unsure where to start now. I was told before, but I didn't do it and now have sadly forgotten. And in a city with many MANY skinny chicks, I don't have the support network I crave. So anyone that can, I would love to exchange "real" emails (I check that more often, guaranteed)... phone numbers... whatever it takes to get us where we want to be.

Any advice where to start would be great! Or where to finish, or about anything in the process. Something that worked for you, something that didn't... whatever. I'm a 23 year old single mom and I'm tired of being FAT. I've been fighting my depression more than anything lately, and have made MASSIVE strides (no pun intended lol) in my emotional well-being, but now my body has suffered and I want to look/feel/be good... healthy, all that jazz. Please, help me. I'm new to this and haven't made much success (anything over 20lbs in unheard of to me) so I want to do this right! Also, money IS one of my issues and I don't think I can afford a gym membership or anything.... "real life" cures suit me best!

Please, and thank you so much for any help! You're appreciated more than you know xoxoxoxo

" Welcome back! You came to right place. I too have struggled with mood disorders and I can relate to where you are coming from. First, I wouldn't focus on such a high number. Thinking about losing 150 pounds is like trying to climb Mount Everest after being a life long couch potato. It will take time and small goals to be made along the way. My goal is to lose 20 pounds. I know I will lose more but that is where I am putting my energy, because I can't lose the rest without losing the first 20.

You don't need a gym membership to workout. I have a dog and I walk him every single day. He motivates me to work out. Mayve you can use your daughter as your motivation. Take her with you when you go for walks.

I'm sorry you suffer from depression. It's a hard illness to overcome but I firmly believe that with a combination of conventional methods (therapy, medication) and inproving your quality of life through exercise, diet, and making other positive choices, depression and other mood disorders don't have to rule your life. " I have struggled with weight since I was in sixth grade. I actually remember it clearly. The summer in between my fifth grade and sixth grade year was the first summer I was allowed to stay home a lone (well, kind of). My father worked nights, so he slept during the day and my mom worked during the day. I remember watching TV and eating snacks all day long instead of going swimming and having fun outside with friends.

In 8th grade, I lost a lot of that weight I had put on. I got down to my healthy weight. I was able to keep off the weight until my sophomore year in HS. Then I maintained my weight for 7 years. Then, I gained a lot of weight this past summer and fall.

So, hmmm....where to start? For me, it's starting my maintaining my current weight for a few months. Once I am able to do that, I am going to start trying to lose some weight. I need to lose about 90 pounds. I am going to try doing little goals every week so I feel like I am accomplishing something. I am not going on a diet, I am changing my life style. This week I am trying to drink 32 ounces of water or more every day. I'll slowly work my way up to drinking 118 ounces of water a day. I also have a goal to eat a healthy breakfast everyday.

Have you heard of TOPS? It isn't that expensive. It is less for a whole year membership than it is for a 1 month membership to WW. I still haven't gone to a meeting, but I want to badly. You can find a meeting group in your area by going to http://www.tops.org.

I am the founder of a group here on DS that a lot of people like. It is called weight loss buddies. Maybe that will help you find support?

Good luck. I agree with soul, you have come to the right place. "
