I weigh a tentative 230lbs and I know clinically Im obese. Most people are, even the skinny chicks on TV are more than likely to be called clinically obese, but am I really fat. Iv been told I wear my weight well, but I still dont like the fact that I have so much fat accumulated on my body but should I really be in this support group? Am I really obese?

I'm not sure how tall you are but remember one thing you have to be happy with yourself first. I think everyone finds fault with their body it's part of who we are. I know I'm fat and I made up my mind to do something about it. It's a slow hard road I didn't get this way over night. Good Luck

according to this BMI calculator, you do qualify as clinically obese. Obesity is gauged as being a BMI over 30, which is gauged by your height and weight. That covers the technical definition of whether you are obese or not. However, that doesn't say whether or not you should feel you need to join this support group. Thats entirely up to you :) I find it theraputic for keeping me conscious of my weight loss attempts, and also it is nice when you have genuine questions or need for emotional support from those who know what you are going through. So if you feel like you need these kinds of support, then this is definitely the place for you

I hate that word Obese. I'm 5'6" and 220 and considered obese. I'd actually have to get down to 190 to be out of the category. I don't feel obese though. I can walk 4 miles, rollerblade, bike for miles. I was actually surprized I was in this category, but it is what it is.

I hate hate HATE the word obese. It carries such a stigma with it, and don't get me started on society's views of us that fall into that category. Discimination is such a no-no, yet discrimination against the overweight/obese is rampant and accepted. I said I wasn't going to get started...lol.
My husband had been telling me that according to the BMI index, he was considered obese. I think he was trying to make me feel better and not alone. The man does not even look overweight to me, much less obese. But sure enough, his BMI is just over the definition. Mine is much higher. Is it just the word that bothers you? As far as I am concerned, all technical definitions aside, if your weight bothers you, then sure, you definately belong here. I just joined this morning myself, after peeking here all week long. So I say, welcome :)

I agree that the term obese is in many ways stupid. If you can't fit into a size six then wow you must be obese. Generally, I only really think of the word in terms of those categorized as 'morbidly obese'. Again, an obnoxious term, as if we aren't all going to die of something (and I know many people who are 'morbidly obese' that live well into their 70s or better). I tend to think of the word obesity instead of the phrase 'morbidly obese' as meaning someone who is 70 or more lbs over their body frame's ideal. If you don't fit the ideal but are below 70lbs overweight, then you are just a bit more shaped, in my opinion. Which I don't think is a bad thing at all. I would be happy with my life even if I could just be size 16

My normal weight had been 125Lbs. to 130Lbs for years. But now I'm at 240Lbs and I'm 5'8" and yes I am now obese - nobody wants to admit that - but I'm now have a serious heart problem and need surgery. My cousin was very obese and she finally got gastric bypass surgery and she was thin for the first time in at least 3 decades! My point to all this is to admit to something we don't want to face and in my case I ended up having heart problems.
But wanted to add that the best way for me to lose weight is to eat as little as possible like fasting and regarding excercise I loved to dance and I love music so since I live in an apartment I have wireless headphones and I turn the music yet and dance...It's fun plus it's very good excercise!
