Watch this
View More Posts Ignore
Hello All,

Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting questions from the new Dr. Oz Show across DailyStrength.

These questions were originally submitted to Dr. Oz and he has invited members from DailyStrength to share their answers.

If your answer is selected, it will appear on the Dr. Oz website and possibly be used on his show.

Here's your question:

"I am trying to cut back on caffeine, any suggestions on how to get over the craving and headaches?"

If you have an answer to this question based on your personal or professional experience, post your response below.

A few tips to help make your answers better:

-Use the same familiar tone you would when writing to a friend here on DailyStrength. It's important that your answer appeal to a wide audience.
-Keep your answers between 150–250 words.
-Remember that the question and the answer need to be two parts of the same thought. Keep your answer short and to the point.

The Dr. Oz Show (http://www.doctoroz.com/) will premiere on September 14, 2009. Check local listings for show times and be watching to see if your answer was selected!

" I have drinked coffee all of my adult life and have easily quit lately without really any effort at all. What I did is this:

I replaced my regular coffee with regular black tea prepared using 2 bags instead of 1, then after a week or 2 of that I started preparing it with 1 bag of tea and then after a week or 2 of that I moved on to simply some healthy green tea, which I continue to drink for the health benefits of its anti-oxidants.I never felt any simptoms whatsoever, wheras before if I ever skipped coffer I would have a terrible headache accompanied with slight nausea. Good luck. "

" Caffeine found in coffee is a psychoactive central nervous system stimulant drug. It is the worlds most often consumed psychoactive substance. By one estimate. 90% of all adults in North America consume coffee.

The best way to cut back is to treat it like a drug. Eat the foods that are rich in the detoxifying compound cysteine. Cysteine inside your body when combined with other ingredients forms a powerful tri-peptide glutathione. This will help detoxify and at the same time manage cravings and decrease the headaches.

You can get additional benefits by adding the cofactors to glutathione production.

You need go no farther than the health food store located in the produce section of your local grocery store.

Cysteine rich foods include...

* garlic
* kale
* onions
* broccoli
* water cress
* cabbage
* asparagus
* Brussels sprouts
* Watermelon

Dairy Products

* unpasteurized milk (should be hormone and antibiotic free)
* ricotta cheese
* cottage cheese
* yogurt

Grains

* wheat germ
* granola
* oats

Cysteine is fragile. Cooking destroys it so it is best to eat them uncooked or only blanched.

Addition of the co-factors will help even more. A few isles over, you will find one of the best sources of one of these co-factors.
Selenium We need 200 mcg a day. Each Brazil nut has about 100 mcg. So eating two a day will give enough to keep the headaches away, if your doing some of the above.

* Fish Oil
* Alpha lipolic acid
* B12, folate, B6, critical for producing glutathione and helping manage stress.

" Around 14 years ago, I was struck with vertigo while on an airplane. The sensation did not lift after about a month so I sought out medical advice from my family doctor, an E.N.T., and neurologist and received no treatment other than a Rx for valium or a raised eyebrow. I began my own research and found that caffeine may be the cause as I consumed a lot of it.

What seemed to work for me was lots and lots of WATER. I did have withdrawal symptoms of a consistent headache that lasted for about a month, but I dealt with it and treated it with ordinary aspirin.

One other thing I avoided along with caffeine was sodium. The reason for this was to try and flush my body out as quickly as possible.

After about 2 months of this, the result didn't cure my vertigo but I was hooked on water! The only thing that takes my thirst away is water. I allow myself a cup of coffee in the morning at work and once in a while, as a treat, I'll have a soda but not always one that contains caffeine. Now if I have too much caffeine, I become nauseous which is telling me to stop.

I also took extra vitamin B complex, C and zinc during this process to replace what is being depleted from the stress of withdrawal. This helps give your immune system a "boost" to prevent illness such as a cold or a flu virus.

I hope my experience has helped! "

" Cutting back on caffiene can be very hard... I live in Seattle, the coffee capitol, I found lowering my caffiene intake slowly helped alot with headaches and sleepiness... I used to drink 4 to 6 double lattes a day... I started by drinking the same amount but ordering them as split-shots (one shot caffinated, one shot decaf) then started cutting down how many coffee drinks in a day... Now I drink a latte about 3 times per week sometimes caffinated sometimes not just depends on how I'm feeling... I no longer need the coffee though... It feels great not to be dependent on something to keep me going but it took a long time for me to get here... You can do the same thing at home by buying decaf coffee and mixing it with your regular coffee or if soda is your thing they sell decaf soda as well "
