NHL and the Elderly

Hello everyone. My sister will be 76 next month. Approximately 10 months ago she was diagnosed with NHL. She started radiation and responded quite well to it. She then started Chop-R and became very, very ill from infections. She completed about ½ of the regimen when they stopped it. She is not now and never has been in remission.
She recently transferred her care from a small hospital in her city to a large university teaching hospital. Her new oncologist spent 2.5 hours with her the other day and told her that she will not survive this, that her age is against her. Is this true? Are there any statistics that indicate elderly people don’t do well with NHL? After reading through the posts I did notice that several of the posters are young… Thank you for any info you can share. My prayers and best wishes to all of you. Posted on 08/27/09, 01:08 pm |

I am very sorry to hear about your sister. I will certainly keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I am certainly not an expert by any means but believe that survial rates etc depend on where the cancer is located, what stage the cancer is in, if any organs are effected. If she is not happy with her Dr and his diagnosis, she should find another oncologist that may offer a different treatment. Keep faithful and dont give up.
