I think that is normal. My son started with that about that age. My worry was that he was only about 5'3" at the time. But he is now a respectable 5'7". So that was our experience.

Thank you Marah...that's what was so strange to me about it because he is still so little. We have an appt. in 3 wks to get a scan and checkup. They are going to do a back scan as well this time, I guess checking for scioliosis. Everytime he complains of pain somewhere, I become concerned about it. Not that he's entered puberty, I'm more worried but I remain calm for him. He thinks nothing of it!

I DID NOT DEVELOPE PHYSICALLY EARLY PUBIC HAIR OR BREASTS. I DID STRAT MY PERIOD AT 10 1/2 YEARS OLD. I MEAN REALLY HEAVY FLOWS AND HORRIBLE CRAMPS. IN FACY MY CRAMPS WERE SO HORRIBLE, MY LABOR PAINS WERE A BREEZE. KATHY

my son is almost 8 and has precocious puberty his has started with strong body odor and and increase in masterbation though no hair yet. i think 12 for a boy is normal my little brother is 14 and started when he was 11 1/2 and he is healthy (for a lack of better phrasing).

It is either early or late. Myself I was very late I was 16. Just watch him. Its normal... he just blommed faster than some.

12 is a perfectly normal time for boys to start to develop. Probably more than half of the girls in his class have started to have periods as well. In fact, I'd be more concerned if he wasn't showing at least some signs by this age. The early puberty they are talking about is generally puberty that is occuring before the age of 8 or 9...in fact some NF children are found to be going into puberty at 4 years old or occasionally even younger. Of course, when it comes to NF puberty can also bring the onset of other troubles but hopefully that won't be the case. Good luck....I have two ten year olds and a 12 year old...the teenage years are going to be fun (NOT!) LOL
